Need help dating a Model 10 and Model 48 (K 22)
« on: February 26, 2005, 04:01:25 PM »
My son just aquired a couple of S&W - we are having trouble finding a site on-line which gives us year of manufacture - does anyone know a site?

Otherwise, can anybody help us with the following:

Model 10  (.38 special, tapered barrel) - Serial# CCK37xx

Model 48 (.22 cal K model with both LR & Mag cylinder) - Serial # K 35XXX

the model 10 is new in box, never shot, the model 48 is 99% - they are beautiful!

Thanks in advance!

Looks like your M10 is from 1994.

The M48 is giving me trouble, The S/N seems too low or is missing a number or two before the K.

Happy Hunter - thanks for your reply on the Model 10, the info is much appreciated.

Concerning the M48, there are no number/letters before the K, and no letters after the K.  I double check the serial, and it is what I had posted.

Although the Model 10 we knew was fairly recent, the model 48 is much older.  Unfortunately, the person who originally owned it passed away, but has been collect S&Ws for 50 years. It could date a few years back.

Does anybody know of an on-line resource to help date S&W's

Yukon Gold,

Here is the info I have on Model 48:

1959  introduced as model 48 beginning with s/n K350000.
1960  model 48-1.  Change extractor rod thread (now left hand).
1962  model 48-2.  Eliminate screw in trigger guard (now a "3 screw" gun).
1968  model 48-3.  Relocation of rear sight leaf screw.  Delete diamond     insert grip.
1977  model 48-4.  Change gas ring from yoke to cylinder.
1982  model 48-4.  Delete pinned barrel.
1986  model 48-4.  Discontinued.

My source is the highly respected "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Jim Supica & Richard nahas.

Another Forum dedicated entirely to Smith & Wessons is:  http://www.smith-wessonforum.com/cgi-bin/sandwcgi/ultimatebb.cgi

As far as an online source for s/n vs date of mfg.  I know of none.  If you find one please let me know.

Happy Hunter - thanks again.

From your info, it looks like I must be missing a digit in my description, should be K35XXXX vs K35XXX.

I may have to have my eye re-adjusted.  I'm sure that you are correct on this.

Regardless, you have been a great help.
