Range Report...
« on: February 26, 2005, 02:25:19 PM »
Spent 3 hours at the range from 11:00- to 1:00, got to shoot the 45-120 BC, 30-30, and the .270 barrel I got from Jeff223. The BC shoots fine, no problems with any of the loads I shot which were 41gr or 42.5gr of XMP5744 and 405gr Cast Performance WLNGC, Montana Precision Swaging cast 500gr RN, 457125 520gr cast from Buffalo Arms and the 405gr rem FN. Also shot the 457125 bullets over 95gr FF Triple 7 by volume which is 62 grns by weight so I could get exact loads. Recoil with the weight in the stock, the Limbsaver and PAST shoulder pay was not an issue. There's a problem with the sights, though....the Williams WGRS peep is too low or the Lyman 17AUG front sight is too high, I think for now, I'm gonna get the lower Lyman front sight instead of buying an expensive rear sight. I got on paper fine at 25yds, but was barely on paper and low at 50yds, also had a problem with windage, rear sight was all the way to one side and I forgot my sight drift, so I couldn't move the front sight to compensate...took 17 45-120 rounds with me, shot all but 2 and I had to leave, range was getting filled up and I had accomplished what I wanted....the .30-30 shoots 1¼" 5 shot groups at 100yds with the 150 gr Rem corlokts, the .270 shoots 1½" 5 shot groups with the 130gr Rem Corlokts.....both of which were barrels that I had to make changes to fit, so I was real happy with those. Had no stuck cases and no pop opens. I did have one dud primer on one the 45-120 using CCI 250 primers, now got to figure out how to pull the bullet. That's all for now.

My range report.  I had 15 45-90s loaded, 5 with 72 gr ffg by volume and a 535gr Lyman, 5 with 80gr ffg and the Lee 450gr FP, and 5 with 75gr fffg and the 535gr Lyman.   They all went boom to the dismay of the group of stumps that happen to be in front of me at about 30yds.  Nope, no real range report to speak of, I was just marveling at the smoke and boom.     I had, quite literally, a blast.  I expect I'll have the same problems with sights that you had when I get to a real range.

For what it's worth, the only group I got was the first 2 rounds at 25yds before I started adjusting sights......2 shots touching 2" right and 3" low.....but touching, never the less!! Seems to me someone else had the same problem with sights, but I thought it was on an older model and H&R had changed the front sight to avoid the problem....Mine has the 17AUG sight which is .584 high, the highest 17A sight made.....H&R should as least put sights on these that work out of the box! I think I'm gonna get the 17AHB from Buffalo Arms, it's .404 high and costs $25 compared to $30 at Midway. The other alternative short of a $140 ladder sight would be the Williams FP-H&R sight from H&R for $60.

All cases looked good, only problem was the one dud primer, clamped a vise-grip on the bullet and whacked the vise grip against the basement step, a dozen whacks later, the bullet and case separated, it had powder it, just a bad primer.  I also crumpled one of my cases a couple days ago while loading jacketed bullets by seating and crimping to tight.....whacked that bullet out too....then cleaned the case good, ran it thru the sizer and the the M die, almost good as new!!! Now to deal with the sight business.... :?

that 130gr Remington ammo was the ticket in that barrel.hope you have time to work up a load for the 270.you may want to pick up some 130gr remington bullets and reload those.it seems like that barrel likes them and the price is right on the Rem bullets.the Rem bullets work good on deer too.

Haywires .45-90 was fun to shoot very nice smoke cloud and some flames, The BOOM of that Goex was great.

My .30-30 is coming in nice udeing 150gr SSTs but I really bought it to shoot cast.

The .223 I picked up two weeks ago is shooting inside an inch at a hunnert yards and I think it can do much better.

Quick that front sight is too tall on my .38-55 also, I have the willaims FP on the back and with it run almost all the way up It will just barely get on the paper at 300yrds. I need the shorter front myself. 8)

I too was able to shoot my BC for the first time this weekend.  I just had winchester 300 gr factory loads, chronied at 1990 fps, compared to the factory estimate of 1880.  So the 8 inches of barrel get a little over 100 fps extra, or about 10% more energy.  I was about 6 inches low at 75 yds and did not make any adjustments to the rear sight.  I had it set low so I will be able to lift the POI.  Also, my lip seemed to get in the way    of the recoil.  Hopefully, lifting the rear sight will move my teeth out of the way a little bit.  Now I need to get set up for loading this bad boy up.

What insert does everyone use in the Lyman front sight?  I went with the smallest dia circle I had and think I need a larger dia.  Not much target was visible with that one.

that is just a ploy to get their hands on a 45-120

I had started a thread last fall about a friend who had to get another lyman front sight.  His was hitting too high at 100 yds with the sight it came with.  He got the stuff but has not done anything with it yet.

I ordered the .404" high 17AHG sight from Buffalo Arms, I figured H&R would have put the right sight on it from the beginning if they had em, but apparently they don't or they would have mentioned it, I would think. I may still order the Williams FP sight from H&R later, but for now I think I'll see what I can do with the WGRS....the range where I shoot only has up to 300yds to shoot, so I don't need anything taller, I don't think....

I didn't mention that I had rechambered it, I didn't think that would fair well with them as far as warranty work....which is out of the question I'm pretty sure!

Makes me wonder if maybe I should send my .38-55 back and have the sights changed and while they're at it have them check out the tight chamber with .380 dia bullets. 8)
