What would you recommend for a twist in a 375 H&H barrel
« on: February 17, 2005, 06:46:10 AM »
What would you recommend for a twist in a 375 H&H barrel?  I pan on using 260-350 grain lead as well as jacketed bullets.  I know the standard seems to be 1 in 12 but I would think a 1 in 14 would also work well?

Thanks,

bigboar :-)

BB,
I agree that the 14 is more than enough, but the 12 gives you the possiblilty of shooting longer slugs like the Barnes.
IMHO the 12 is too fast and I read recently that it may be the cause for problems with the .375 and penetration because even the 300 is spinning tooo fast.

The article had to do with a head shot on a cape buff that took a sharp turn while it should have penetrated straight.  I think that they upped the weight to 350gr and got better performance.

I actually shot a small buck (120#) with my #1 and while I expected the slug to zip right through, it actually hit the shoulder on an angle and did a 90deg knocking out a section of the chops and the other shoulder as well.

The bullet stayed inside the deer and the shot was only 30 yds

I have the 300gr slug (now about 220gr).  I expected Federal's load to do more.  I was very surprised.
