How to make shot cartridge?
« on: February 27, 2005, 04:10:21 AM »
I'm thinking that I would like to try a round or two of shot out of my half scale Napoleon if for no reason other than just for the fun of it.  Really have no idea on just how to go about assembling a shot cartridge though.  My current thought is to put it together somewhat like the foil wrapped powder cartridge but with only a couple layers of foil and a cardboard plug added to the bottom of the cartridge.  My normal round ball weighs right at 2 1/2 pounds so I am thinking of using around 2 1/4 pounds of 36, 45 or 50 caliber round ball.  Any of you have experience at this?

I posted some pics of cannister awhile back. You have the idea, that is make up a foil pack like a powder pack. I used a wood sabot cut with a hole saw between the powder and shot. Scrap plywood worked OK. With your bore size about 2" thick for the sabot. Just glue the plywood together.

Red Bull can for proper diameter.  You might be able to use one as a canister for the shot.

Why so think?  The only reason I can think of offhand is the sabot is inserted separately before the foil wrapped shot.  Having it thicker (longer) would make it much less likely to turn sideways in the bore.

A few years ago I built an air cannon, and used plastic medicine bottles as shot cups.  It worked pretty well, but of course they were usually only single use. :-)

Thicker won't hurt. Not much weight to wood. The sabot keeps the powder gasses from blowing through the shot charge. I could really tell a difference when I loaded a shot package on top of the powder without a sabot. The shot went all over the place and left the muzzle with less velocity. This was in my 1 7/8 gun.

I will be doing some shooting later today in the 1 11/16 bore gun.
