Unusual model 70 in .264 mag.

A friend has a model 70(made in '61) in 264 mag that has no provision for a front sight-the barrel is the correct length(26").  It also has no dovetail cut for a rear sight.  His father bought the gun new in '62,  I have never seen a smooth barrel standard grade pre 64 model 70 , nor do any of my references mention one.  I suppose you could special order anything from Winchester then-but my friend says his father was strictly an "off the shelf" man.  He wants to sell ,and it's about a 98% gun, but I'm at a bit of a loss to tell him what it's worth.  Have any of you seen a configuration like this?

In 1963 I bought a model 70 westerner in .264 and it had no sights.

The description you've given makes me think that this is a "Gopher Special".  There was a sporting goods store in Faribault, Minnesota, I believe, that had Winchester make up a run of Model 70s with no sights.  However, the barrel still had the "hump" for the rear sight since the fore end screw went into the bottom of this "hump".

Like "BUGEYE" my "Westerner" didn't have any sights on it when I bought it new.  Designed for scope use is what I always figured.  Lawdog

Thanks for the info.  His rifle also has the hump where the rear sight would have been.  Since I made the original post I discovered a picture of a special order sightless model 70 in Whitaker's book on the model 70.

Tell your friend NOT to sell his pre-'64 Model 70 until he finds out FOR SURE what it's value is.

At one of the net sites that sells firearms, I saw a pre-'64 Model 70 ACTION on which someone had already bid "$1500"... just for the ACTION... and the bidding was NOT over!!!

The current prices being paid for certain older rifles, like the pre-'64 Winchester Model 70's and Savage Model 99's borders on "unbelievable"!
