What do you think would be the quietest cartridge available for a Handi (or that a Handi could be rechambered for)? I live in an area where I can shoot, but I think the less noise I make the better off I would be in the long haul. I would need something adequate from crows to coyotes and I would settle for just crows if I had to. Thanks!!

I'd go for the 17hmr or 22mag in a Sportster for conditions like that, never heard what a 22 hornet sounds like, but would add that to the list too if they're close to as quiet as the 2 rimfires and yotes past 100yds are on the menu. One nice thing about the hmr is the bullets will not ricochet like the 22mag bullets will lest you use the Vmax rounds in the 22mag.

22 hornet in summer time is not loud ,it gets muffled by the brush. In the winter it sounds about like a 20ga. :eek:

A 38 Special, using about 3 grians of Unique pushing a 200 grian bullet in a 357 barrel, or a 44 Russian case with about 4 grains and a similar bullet weight in a 44 Mag barrel

I use 3 grains of Bullseye or 231 under a 135 truncated cone cast in .38 Special cases for a little flatter trajectory. Doesn't sound like a gunshot at all. Probably would not registerl to someone a hundred yards away.

A big, heavy bullet travelling below the speed of sound, and using the least possible (quickest burning) powder to do it, will be your least noisy.

-Is that enough qualifiers..?

Just make some type of silencer out of a roll of toilet paper or lawnmore muffler

. Then you can shoot anythig you want. :-D

Not a really good thing thing to say...even in jest ......no offense...but making any kind of silencer for a pistol or rifle isn't exactly legal is it?

JPH and DJ are right on as usual, My .357 loaded with light cast bullets is a pop gun. Almost no noise to speak of and fun to shoot, Soda cans tremble when that rifles around.

Another plus to this chambering is when loaded hot its a good hunting round for any soft skinned critter walking. Not as quite as the .38s thou.

No offense taken. It's probably illegal. I wouldn't do it. I don't need to.
Saying it is one thing, doing it is another. I could get away with it where I shoot. But I've got better things to occupy my time

.22lr, in either Super Colibri or CCI CB Longs. Both make about as much noise as a slingshot; the CB's seem a bit more accurate and have a heavier bullet.
