Best Lightweight Rifle set up for Elk
« on: February 08, 2003, 07:14:47 PM »
:-) OK Guys. I'm still deciding on a rifle set up for my first Elk hunt. I know I need to cover shooting distances out to 350 yds and will be doing a LOT of hiking, (spot & stalk hunting).
Is there a lightweight tack driver available out there? I'd like to go at least 7mm Mag powerwise for this hunt. The only rifle I know about that may fill the bill is a Weatherby Ultra Lightweight, but I don't think its in my budget parameters.

Seems you have two things here, the cartridge and the make/model of rifle. If you can decide on a rifle, that may help you decide the chambering, since they may only offer selections.
Shots out to 350 calls for something pretty fast out of the gate, so figure out how much recoil you can handle and then you'll know how big a hole you're willing to make. Not sure I'd want to try to kill an elk at 350yds with anything small enough to call "featherweight."
Like my old man sez, "The rifle you want to carry ain't the one you want to shoot, and the one you want to shoot ain't the one you want to carry!"

Me, I'd take a bigun' out for elk, and just figure on getting a good workout with my 9 1/2" rifle.
Laminate-stocked Win M70 Classic, chambered in 358 STA topped off with a VXII 3-9x40. And a good, thick sling.
275gr A-Squares going 2850 ought to do it.

(Hmmm, matter of fact and speakin' of which....)

Southern Utah, Do you feel a muzzle tamer would be needed with the .300 mag? I already have an Encore SST in .50(muzzle loader) and would only need a barrel/forearm.

I would say go with the 30.06, i know its boring and plain-jane, but it works well out to 350 yards, and recoil is pleasant.  300 win mag is fine, and better for longer shots than 350 yards, but inside that range, bullets work better at 06 velocities (that should get some comments!).  Drop isnt much different until you get way out there.  A 30 caliber is a good choice, but a 33 or 35 caliber is better, but not absolutly necessary.  I just sold my 300 win mag and kept the 30.06, and bought a 35 whelen.  Both rifles are used for elk.  I dont shoot past 300 yards at elk anyway, only at targets.  Shooting 500 yards at targets really humbled me in my shooting abilities though.  I know a lot of people that shoot a LOT less than me and they talk about it all the time.  Like my buddy with the 30-378 that couldnt hit the 18" gong at 500 yards, and i sat next to him with my "slow" 300 win and rang the thing over and over.

Oh, and you asked about recoil, I'm a small guy, 165lb, and the 300 win never bothered to shoot unless it was lots of shots off the bench.  Get out and shoot your rifles from field positions, and the recoil is a lot easier to take.  Probably the best elk rifle for the 350 yard shots and under (assuming you practice at these ranges) is the 338 win mag.  Which, by the way, is pretty close to the 30.06 in trajectory.  Recoil will definatly be more, however.  338 win mag may be the best all around elk specific rifle.

Tom,
If you have the Encore check out the T/C Custom Shop. They make a 338-06 barrel for your Encore. Weatherby & A-Square provide factory ammo plus there are some custom outlets that load the 338-06. It has less recoil that the .300 mags and some good bullets are available. Good luck wiht both your shopping and hunt!!!

How about a Remington model 7 in 7mm saum or 300 saum?

:-D I had a St/Syn model 7 in .308 and the damn thing nearly bucked out of your hands with 165gr loads. I can't IMAGINE shooting one with any accuracy in those short mag calibers at 300 yds!

PS I'm a big guy and not  really bothered by recoil but I really like a rifle I can drive tacks with and I've never seen anyone do that at even 100yds with short barreled(18-20") rifles. :biggun:

Well i dont know about driving tacks, but my 30.06 groups under an inch at 100 yards.  And thats a 7.5lb rifle with a 19.5 inch barrel.  Has a pachmayar whiteline recoil pad on it, and its suprisingly tame with 165's considering its weight.
