?'s for handloaders of the Handi/Ultra .223 Rem.
« on: February 28, 2005, 02:16:30 PM »
Today, I got around to examining my .223 Ultra and found that the throat on my rifle is longer than a giraffe's!

For those of you whom have accurate loads:

What "OAL" have you found to be the most accurate? or What seating depth are you using for what bullets? or How far off the rifling are you seating your favorite bullets?

I know this is asking a lot, BUT I'm a big guy(225#) and I can take it!!!

I seat my bullets to the col in the Hornady(or other manual) that I am getting my data from. After Experamenting with the seating depths I have found best accuracy from my rifle(s) occurs when I have the col set at book value in the .223. I have seated the barnes 53 gr X bullet out very far and not come up with any better accuracy than seated at recomended col. This is a long for caliber bullet to start with is accurate in my rifle for my intended purpose and penetrates and holds together well even on shoulder bones.

When I was developing loads for my .223 NEF, I decided on using Hornaday and Nosler 55gr bullets. I chose these bullets because I hunt coyotes and I like the heavier weights. I use only Benchmark powder now.  When loading/shooting the 55gr Horns (SP's), the OAL is 2.300. My best group, in my 60 yard range (backyard) was .250. When loading/shooting the 55gr Noslers (BT's), the OAL is 2.335. My best group with these Noslers was .187.
I have shot other brand 55gr bullets in my NEF and they all shoot very well.

 I load my 40gr Nosle BT OAL 2.320.  I have loaded some Hornandy 50gr. V-Max out to 2.4 But am waiting to try them out.

Thanks guys,

I'll start somewhere in the vicinity of 2.30" and work from there. Shot some cheap, and I do mean cheap Federal American Eagle 55g FMJ's the other day and got groups of 2" at about 120 yds. This from a clean barrel.

Guess that's OK for $5.00-a-box ammo.

I shot mine today, and it was windy, but I got three rounds to clover-leaf at 100 yards using 27 grains of Varget with a 50 grain spsx bullet. I think the other load I tried using BLC-2 will probably shoot close to the same.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens
