!!! Rem. 11-48 firing pin not hitting hard enough !!!
« on: March 02, 2005, 12:26:17 PM »
I cleaned my 11-48 the other night because i took it squirrel hunting last weekend. Well i took it out last night and was gonna target shoot with it.  i loaded the first shell and took the gun off safety, went to pull the trigger and all you could hear was a light click. Well i thought it was just a misfire so i waited and the shell never went off. I took the shell out of the gun and looked at the primer and there was a VERY light dent in the primer.

Is the firing pin broke or what's the deal. I really need some help.

either the pin is broke or bent or the hammer is bent or broke or the spring coiled beside the base of the hammer in the trigger group is weak.

i would check all of those, but if it worked just fine last time you used it i would suspect something broken, likely the pin.

Go to the library and check out (firearms assembly/disassembly, part V, shotguns. It has a total teardown on the 1187. I liked it so much I bought one. Also (learn gunsmithing, the troubleshooting guide). By the editors of American Gunsmith. Just take your time, lay the parts down in the order taken apart.

The 1187 and the 11-48 are totally different designs. The 11-48 is a remake of the Browning A4/Rem M11 design.  It's a recoil operated semi auto.  If the gun was funsctioning before the cleaning I'd suggest first making certain the gun was re-assembled correctly.  How far did you take the gun down for cleaning.  Was the barrel removed? The trigger assembly?  It's possible the bolts not moving forward fully into battery.  Not fully locked the gun may have enough slack to drop the hammer but the firing pin won't work correctly. Is the forarm seated and the forearm cap firmly screwed down?  I suppose first how far was the guns taken down for disassembly?  The link below is to an exploded diagram of the 11-48.  These guns can get a bit cantankorous at times.

The 11-48 has the same rebounding firing pin that the 1100 and 11-87 have and is prone to firing pin return spring breakage. When the spring breaks, the firing pin binds and does not adequately strike the primer...

You are right about the rebounding firing pins being similar but the gun stopped working after it was disassembled for cleaning. A firing pin spring with the pinched end assembled wrong could cause the same problem? Is the pin cammed back by the unlocking of the locking block? It's been a long time and I simply don't remember.
