Which Ultra Slug Deluxe ???
« on: March 05, 2005, 12:33:44 PM »
I have read many postings from this forum. Why does everyone prefer the 20 gauge over the 12 gauge. Is it a matter of recoil ?? Is it the weight of the gun?? Is there a difference in accuracy??
I would figure the 12 gauge would be more popular because of all the ammo that is availabe for it. I am in the market for one of these slug guns and can't decide what gauge to purchase . This gun is going to be used in iowa and Illinois. Looking for some opinions guys :P

the 20 .ga is more popular because:
it kicks less
wieghs less(1/7 lb
in several cases it more accurate.
the 20 .ga has plenty of energy out to 200 yds. this does not mean you should shoot AT a deer out to 200 yds it just means it has the power if you can get it out there. the 20 .ga has about the energy of a .50 cal muzzle loader w/ 3 pyrodex pellets shooting a 240 gr. bullet. has amyone ever doughted that gun? the 12 .ga is the way to go if you shoot under 70 yds whenyou cant have the deer run more than 20 yds, for fear another hunter may shoot it(PA). the choice between the 12 and 20 .ga gun for deer is like choosing between a 30/06 or a .223 for prarrie dog..........but if you have a 10 .ga frame the 12 .ga is the way to go! hope this helps.
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

One of the main reasons the 20 gauge is more popular over the 12...is that you can get a 20 ga. Ultra slug barrel for your Handi-rifle. you can't do that with the 12 ga.....if you aren't concerned about doing that...get the 12 ga. and make it a dedicated slug gun...I used one for a long time till I moved out of Illinois...It does kick more than the 20ga...but it is everybit as accurate...mine gave me 1" groups(5shots) at 100 yards with the Lightfeild 2-3/4" Hybrid slug......it recoil is a problem...go with the 20ga..

Three of us have been deer hunting for several years with the 20ga ush
and all I can say is they have rifle like ballistics out to 150yds with proper sabots ie remington ultra core-lokts and barnes expanders closer in lightfield hybred exp's bottom line accuracy, accuracy, accuracy.GL

The real question is , Why not get both? Seriously though the fact that you can get so many more barrel options for the 20ga is a big factor. Modern sabots rounds for the 20ga are deadly effective and accurate almost as far as the 12ga and they recoil less. All that being said my slug gun is a 12ga. Not because I needed the extra range and power but because the 12 ga was a good deal and I already had $100.00 worth of ammo for it. I plan on putting together an ultra 20ga one of these days.If I was starting with nothing I'd buy the 20.

For the price they are asking just buy both..

Seriously, the 20GA does kick less but it is not more or less accurate than the 12GA...It all comes down to personal preference.  A plus for the 12 is that the 12GA sabot slugs are more plentiful than the 20GA sabots so you should have a greater selection.  Of course this may only be regional and your results may vary.  This is just my experience in Western NY State.  I have a 12GA now but I have considered picking up a 20 USH Deluxe for whitetail season...Oh well, I have too many other things that I need before that so I will probably just keep writing that I plan on getting one some day.

Good luck.
