223 Heavy BBL.
« on: March 10, 2005, 03:15:59 AM »
I just got a new heavy bbl. in 223. I have loaded for this cartridge in bolt guns but not the encore. Are there any special considerations to consider when loading for a single shot? I am going to use Benchmark powder, with a 40 gr. Bal Tip. Anybody have a pet load with this combination?

I have the same barrel. I also load for bolt guns also. Just follow loading instructions from the reloading manual.
My barrel likes 40V MAX and 50 V MAX. Powders I use are H 4895 and W 748. Your barrel will tell what it LIKES...
I bought one of the same barrels in the 204 Ruger. It is shooting 3/4" groups with factory ammo.
Might just think about selling the 223 since the 204 looks awful good...
Good Luck with your NEW barrel...

JohnR,

I have a Contender with 24" barrel that has a couple good loads.
The Sierra 55g SPT. over 26g H4895 has printed a nice .25" group and the Combined Tech Ball-Silvertip over 26g H4895 has printed a .40" group.

This charge weight is neat because I have a set of Lee's Powder Dippers and the 1.9CC dipper is rated for 26g H4895. Makes loading a snap!
