Modified Lyman sights
« on: January 07, 2005, 10:07:21 AM »
Today my son and myself machined a hole in my 17A Lyman sight on my RRB rifle to accept a 6mm dia. spirit level vial. WE machined the hole just in front of the sight insert and as low as we could without getting into the barrel and epoxied the vial in. It works great, you can see it clearly in your perifreal (spell check) vision while consentrating on front post. It's out front where it's in the light. The vial has only one line in the middle hid by the front post so all you have to do is center the bubble on the post and your ready to go. The vial cost less than $1.00 from McMaster Carr supply. Later today we also installed a 5/16" vial in a Lyman 20MJT and it works great also. Hope this helps someone.

Great American ingenuity, and way cheaper than the spendy store  bought sights!

I'll have my brother take a photo and try to post it or sent it to someone who knows how.

I now have 3 photos of my modified 17A lyman sight with spirit level. I will email them to any one who would like to see them. I would post them but don't know how, besides big photos are better , just download slower. Just hope it helps someone out.

Go to http://photobucket.com/register.php and register, it's free. Log in, choose the Browse button to find the pic on your PC, select the pic by clicking it, then hit the submit button. After it says the pic has been added to your album, go to the pic, below the pic are 3 boxes, click in the IMG box to highlight it, then right click in the box and select COPY, then come here and after you creat a post, before you submit the post, right click below your text and select PASTE, then submit the post. The pic will show up embedded in your post.

Would like to see your work, I've been debating on whether to spend the $70 for a spirit level front sight for my 45-120 Buffalo Classic.

Looks good! What "machine" did you use to make the hole in the sight?

Quick, I used a Bridgeport milling and a 6mm end mill cutter. It's about the only way you can get it to go straight through. I did it with the sight on the barrel, that way it comes out perfectly level . I think that light comes in from the ends of the vile which probably helps ,but if you don't like the yellow dot you could paint it black. Thanks for the help with the photos.

Yup, I thought about trying to do it with a drill, can't see how I would keep it in track, even with a pilot hole.

Glad to help,

Tim
