I am new to contenders so please bear with me. How much side play , if any, is tolerable? Barrel hookup at receiver is tight both sideways & up&down, but there is side play or wobble by the receiver-barrel hinge pin area. How tight should the hinge pin be? Mine can be removed with your finger & no force or pressure required. What type of weaver style rings does everyone use & what height?

No clue about side play.

I use warne rings and medium height rings for all scopes (or you won't have enough room to put your thumb on the hammer... unless you got a hammer spur for it)

I prefer little if any slop ...side to side in the hinge pin area but there will be some. Only a couple options.....live with it....or purchase an oversize pin. If it locks up tight I would worry about it. If it doesn't send it back to TC and make them make it right.
I don't care for Weaver rings at all but I do use a Weaver base and med. height Burris/Leupold rings. They will accomodate up to 44mm obj. lens scopes that I have.

I'm working out this issue with my Encore right now. I believe your Contender hinge pin is 0.375 diameter. The Encore is 0.4375 base diameter. Using telescoping hole gauges and a micrometer that read down to 0.0001, I measured my Encore.

Pin Dia.: 0.4371
Frame: 0.4375 (both sides)
Barrel #1: 0.4375
Barrel #2: 0.4378

An authority on T/C's, Mike Bellm, recommends a 0.0003" interference fit. You can do a search on his site as it can't be posted on this forum.

Are your encore barrels factory or custom? I read about 2 years of back topics & unless I interpeted it wrong most everyone says the sloppiness doesn't botheraccuracy.. I t is just a personal thing to me, it just doesn't feel right. I guess its mind over matter. Maybe it takes alittle to get use to.

One barrel is a factory 209x50. The other is a Bullberry 338 Win Mag. And yes a sloppy hinge pin will effect accuracy. Probably not so much with the muzzleloader barrel, but definitely with a rifle barrel. The slop changes the frame flexing so shot to shot uniformity goes out the window.

I find it funny that the "authority" on TC's recommends a hinge pin that, according to MANY of the shooters that I've heard from, doesn't really seem to make a difference and in some cases decreases accuracy. I'm not attacking his motives or experience, but I'm always sceptical when the recommended fix for every contender or encore out there happens to be a product that the person making the recommendation is selling. Add that up to the number of people who have tried it and say it doesn't work or causes problems, and you might start to question some things.
MEK, I would say that you need to just take your gun out and shoot it. The pin in my contender removes easily, but it shoots great. I wouldn't worry about it unless you can't get groups like you want them. Sometimes the pin might help, but I wouldn't mess with it unless there is a problem. Contrary to what you might hear, there are a lot of factory barrels that will shoot wonderfully for you.
