Comparing the Ruger LCP a Kel-tec 3AT
« on: March 10, 2013, 07:25:26 AM »
How much difference is there?  The Rugers cost more but are they any better?  If you lay one on top the other do they match up as far as hight, trigger guard position and so forth.

I am asking because I didn't get any replies on my wallet holster thread. ;)   I need to find out if the one for the ruger will fit the Keltec.

Any help would e appreciated.

Don't own the LCP, but have handled and shot a couple. Too my eyes they are identical. If you order a pocket holster, they are usually identified as for the Ruger LCP or Kel tec P3AT. I have two of the later.

Thank you for the prompt reply.  The holster I am refering to can be seen at:

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/guide-gear-ruger-lcp-pistol-holster.aspx?a=931973

As you can see it looks to be fairly form fitting.  I found nearly the identical holster on one of the kel tec holster sites on the sticky.  It says to specify which it's for but it is $30 more than the one above.

For $30 less if you have to trim a little here or there or redo a stitch, no big deal?

That type holster is NOT legal in all states. Make sure it is in yours before you spend the bucks. Last I heard it isn't legal here in Bama.

that holster looks rather interesting.  The finger hole looks to be more problematic than functional.

I have a nylon pocket holster with a 'sticky' band across it front and back to help it stay in place while pulling the pistol out. It also rides and stays well in the kidney carry or a jacket inner or outer pocket. Its a good 'all rounder' for me. Its an Uncle Mike's Nylon Open-Top Inside-The-Pocket Holster, cheap on Amazon. I also have a generic cheap ITW clip-on that Ive used for years with small autos and J frame revolvers that 'just works' in a number of positions and places, so I keep it (and would get another if I lost it). Either gun will carry all day long....Im talkinin' about ALL DAY LONG, and you wont be tired of it, but I only have to say 'its a Ruger', not explain what a Kel-Tec is.
Also, my LCP is 'Mikey', cause it eats everything, even that varnished steel case Tula.

I'd go with the Ruger too. The newer model with serial # 3700XXXXX have an upgraded trigger with a lighter and shorter pull. Also the sights have been updated. A much nicer sight picture. Ruger also has a manual slide stop.  I'm very happy with mine.

For a holster I'm using a Desantis Super Fly pocket holster.

I've had both the kelTec .32 and when the 380 came out, got it. I later got an LCP. To me, the Ruger was bit more "refined", but no more reliable than the kelTec. Its Sixes. so whatever feels best in your hand will be best. I also shot Buffalo Bore +P 100gr HC in both for carry. Pretty snappy in both. Good luck to you Pard!
PS  I'd also add that these little pistols are not designed to shoot thousands of rounds, rather, to be reliable with the right ammo, using the right grip, in close range personal protection. I never expected one to last as long as a stock Glock or 1911, and while there are examples of individual pistols lasting a long time, its just not the norm. However, the "best" part of using a pistol of this type is (a) it it breaks, you can easily replace it. (b) if you ever have to use it, the police will take it and you may never see it again. Much better than your tricked out Wilson or even a decent Kimber. lol.  Of course, one must have confidence in one's CCW handgun. For me, I decided to go with the smallest handgun "I could fight with", not just a belly gun. I personally could not hit well with either pocket pistol "like I wanted to". The smallest I found that I could fight with, hit with, was reliable was the PF9. Then I actually found that I preferred going to a G19/23/29 package. Sure, at my age, I'd rather live over an attack and lose my pistol to the Law than get hurt or killed because I couldn't stop the threat. I am also a firm believer ( I am, no one else may be) in any up close and personal (figure grappling, etc) its difficult to beat a good tactical folder, in spite of the "knife to a gunfight" cliché. A knife sure beats me having to use "the Ranger thumb in the eye" defense, ha.

I find that comment interesting. I am curious why a CCW permit holder would be restricted from using a concealment holster of their choice.  KY has no such regulations so this seems foreign to me.
