.35 Remington 21" carbine barrel?? I have a Super 16" I used for deer hunting in Indiana but would kind of like to find a 21" barrel in this classic old cartridge....

Yes there is, i have a blue .35 Rem 21" Carbine that i have taken a few deer with. Shoots really well with the Rem 150 grain factory loads, or the Hornady 180 SSP spire point over a load aof H4198. Recoil is pretty sharp , i actually broke a rear scope ring on it once, and later switched out to a millett dual dovetail all steel base, then didnt have any more troubles. I see one occasionally , Ed takes in a used one now & then, or the custom shop will make you a new one for around $250. i stuck a 2-7 leupold on mine, its one of my favorite carbine barrels.

Thanks for the reply...I'll be on the look-out for one.
I shot the 158 gr Remington SJHP PISTOL bullets for deer after having very poor performance from the 180 Gr Hornady SSP bullet (i think the jacket is simply too thick on this bullet for reliable expansion on deer size game)
The pistol bullets(intended for .38/.357's) shot very well and at the increased velocity in the Contender were deadly on deer.My longest kill was about 165 yards across a picked corn field.

Dana, I've been shooting the 180SSP for somewhere around 20 years out of both 10" and 14" 357Max and 357Herret and have NEVER had one fail on deer yet. If I had to pick one bullet from all calibers for deer this would be the one. My bullets are rather old as I bought quite a lot of them and they may be a difference in lots or something. I've never had much luck with accuracy trying the shorter pistol bullets with any of these barrels. The old REM150SP was the only bullet lighter than 180gr that I've got to shoot very well and good luck on finding any of them anymore. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt :shock: :shock:

Walt,i only shot ONE deer with that bullet and it failed to expand at all.I did get complete penetration but i may as well have been shooting FMJ's.This was an above average size Indiana whitetail at about 125 yards.
I got the pistol bullets to consistently shoot about 1 1/2" at 100 yards with a 4X scope. I'd get an occasional group of 1 1/4".The terminal performance of those thin jacketed bullets was just terrific at the .35 Rem velocities..
I'd be glad to send you a handful if you want to try them...

Thanks for the offer Dana, but I've got some on hand. Shoot'm in my 357 blackhawk. I'm still puzzled :? about your 180's. The only complaint I've ever heard about them was that they expanded too quickly. Maybe you got a mis-marked box or something, I don't know. Deer in this part of VA. are about the same size as yours and other than my 45-70, I don't have anything that puts'm down any quicker than my 357H and the 180ssp. And your velocity should be a little higher than mine. Strange! Oh well. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt :grin:
