Need help in selecting a scope for .204 ruger
« on: January 10, 2005, 11:45:34 PM »
I just purchased a cz 527 american in curly maple yesterday and need some help in chooseing a good quality scope without sinking too deep in my pocket. I am going to use this rifle for varmints and predators and some target shooting at distances up to 300 yards. I am willing to spend a max of 400.00 for a scope.

thanks Ed!

I mounted a Leupold VX2 6-18x40 w/AO on my 204 Ruger Target rifle. It cost $ 407.50 including shipping charges. It was ordered Dec. 04 from Bruno Shooters Supply Tel (623) 587-7641.  AT 18 X  the scope was ok for shots made out to 300 Yds. I dident try any shots over 300 Yds.

I recently purchased a Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5, for my .22-250 Rem.  I am VERY
impressed with this scope.  It makes my VX-II Leupold look sad in the clarity, and
brightness categories.  I got the scope from the Optics Zone, for $350, so it should
fit into your budget, and leave some money for more ammo.   I own Leopold, Nikon,
Bushnell, Burris, and Weaver scopes.  I just purchased a new Tikka T3, in .223 Rem.
Guess which brand of scope will be going on that rifle?  As soon as the gun slush
fund gets to $350, Jon at the Optics Zone, will be getting another order for a
Nikon Monarch.

I would be looking for a scope in the 6-18x to 6-24x power range.  Nice to crank it up on those 300 yard shots, especially on critters in the ground squirrel size range.  When shooting a rifle with very little to no recoil, it is sometimes very funny to see the reaction of a critter on a close miss.   :-D   Just a thought, you might stop in at Ebay and check out what is on auction there.  I picked up a NIB(new in box) with guarantee, Leupold 6.5-20x a while back for 60% of what it would cost thru Cabela’s.  Lawdog

I would put a nikon monarch on this rifle in a heartbeat but i want to use the rings that came with this rifle so 40mm objective is the max i could go.
It looks like a leupold VX-II  6x18x40 mm in fine cross will be my choice.

I put a Simmons scope on mine.

I feel that with the low (no) recoils that as long as you have clear optics you should be fine.

But some people might think I'm wrong to think like that.

I've shot Crows and Pdogs beyond 300 yards with this scope so it works.

Now if I was serious about getting into the 1000yard club on Pdogs I wouldn’t be using this scope

Just a side note this Simmons scope was free because my 20 year old Simmons scope quite holding zero. There customer service was to say the least very good.

Here's a switch for me...go to one of our sponsers and look at the Burris Fullfield 2's...it's got the ballistic plex reticles...and you get a real nice spotting scope as well...great scopes...I am entirely pleased with mine...and the mil-dots are pretty cool for distant target shooting...

I have a 3 x 9 Leupold on mine. In fact I have 3 x 9 Leupolds on about a dozen different varmint rifles. With a 9x scope you have a point of aim good enough to hit grounds farther than the .204 will shoot flat. With the 3x scope you have a good walk around fast shot scope. For a hunting scope in the mid-West the 3 x 9 is the best. For PD`s more power would be better and for bench rest shooting the more the better. But what ever you do get a Leupold. I cannot afford anything better and I will settle for nothing less.

I would have to recommend a Vari-x III 4.5-14x50.  I have one on my 300 RUM and will likely get the same for my soon to be aquired .204 ( ok maybe a 22-250, but thats another topic) I routinely shoot out to 450-550 yards with my RUM and have been very, very impressed with the optics of this scope.  I have looked into an Eite 4200 but do not like the reticle at all, way too thick. This scope will run about $600, and a bit more than you want to spend. But in my opinion you should put more money into your glass than your rifle.

Dang .. I guess I'll just have to be different here. We all have our likes and our dislikes. For me, I like something I can crank up close for bench shooting yet can adjust it down for a woods setup. I like the 6-24x40 scopes for this purpose. I know some will say that is crazy but it does work pretty good for me. At 6x, I am still okay for fairly close up coyote shots and an occasional ground hog. At 24x, I can zero in my reloads at the range much better than I can with lesser power and the confidence factor seems to be much higher.

I put a 6-24x40 Bushnell Elite 4200 Mildot on my last varmit rifle and I really like it so far. I paid $410 for it.

The scope i finally bought and mounted on my 204 is a sightron II 4X16x42 with mil dot recital. The scope is really clear and well worth the 360.00 i paid for it. I did learn one lesson from this i should of used a lapping tool which i do own now or used the burris signature zee rings instead of the rings that came with the cz because when i tried to level the cross hairs and turned the scope i scratched it on the very edge of the rings. I touched it up with a little black satin paint and a artist bursh so nobody can tell only me.
