I have a confession

I set 3/32th 7X7,10ft snares on cowtrails in grazed off pastures last winter and snared coyotes. There I said it.No brush.just bare trails.5 to 7 snares at a spot. Some refusals, but not alot.No kill poles.Used Amberg locks had 1 live coyote and I think he had just been caught.I saw tracks in gopher mounds and setup the trails. This has really got me thinking.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

There are always exceptions to every rule but in my part of the country one would get 10 refusals for every 1 or 2 acceptances if the snare is not well blended with the terrain.  However, a snare placed any way in a well used trail is going to outproduce one place with camouflage in a lesser used area.  Ace

I talked to a goverment trapper once about this very thing. He was snaring coyotes, cats, and lions in the exact same manner you are describing. No cover over beer can tall. He was having exceptional luck with it.

My father has tried it and had some luck. I have never got a coyote to go through a snare in such a circumstance. I have caught other animals in that manner, but not coyotes.

Coyotero, its about time you got some cable hung...you been there for over 6 months.   :-D   Now, get rid of that 3/32 and go to 5/64.  If you are concerned with chew outs add an extension to give them a good run at the lock.  You might even experiment with some 1/16 1X19 cable.  I've not used the 1X19 with Ambergs but it works well with Cams and Marty's Stinget springs.

Asa, if we had to find cover to camo snares we'd never hang one.  In thickets etc the coyotes seem to more cat like in the travel habits while in the open they often just trot on down the trail which is a bad thing for them.

Get after it you're not getting any younger.  And, those short lines aren't that bad to run.
