Silhouette rifles
« on: January 30, 2005, 03:41:44 PM »
I am considering getting into lever-action cowboy silhouettes.
Can someone tell me what the more successful shooters are using?
Rifle, caliber, sights?
I have considered a Marlin 336 but don't know if the micro-groove rifling will work ok with lead bullets.
Thanks for any help.

I like my 336CB in 30-30. Williams receiver sights w/ target knobs, factory front. The CB has conventional rifling, but the micro groove isn't any problem as long as the bullets fit properly. My micro barrels like bullets at least .312" across the driving bands and .303" on the nose. Anything less won't work for beans. The new CB has a large bore as well, I use the SAECO bullet designed for the .303 Brit in it with wonderful results.

NOBADE,
Where can I get a 336CB?
They aren't listed in the Marlin website.
Thanks,
Clyde

I had this same question a few months ago and decided to go with a Win 94.  Why get a Marlin which is questionable with cast bullets when you know a Winchester 94 will work great with them and there are plenty of load combinations that are proven to work great.  Why limit yourself to one 303 bullet when there are dozens of 30 cal choices that will work great.

I know that some people don't like the Win and the Marlin feels better but you are going to be investing lots of money and time into making the most perfect silhouette round and it is easier to do with a Winchester unless you just get lucky and the first load you try is the one that works.  That doesn't happen very often.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

I have a 30-30CB and it shoots all cast just fine.  I use the RCBS 180, Lyman's two 30-30 bullets and a little 115gr. Lee I believe.  The Lyman 311041 gave me a .5 inch group that was enough to win the match over on shooters last year.  They are great shooters and no longer made.

ihmsa70,

The current NRA Cowboy Silhouette Rifle record for the 60 shot  course is 57x60.  The fellow that set it used a .30-30 Marlin 336A (24" barrel / partial magazine) that he bought for less than $200 on the internet.  He was using jacketed bullet loads though.

Like NoBade, I have had no accuracy problems with micro grooved rifling using cast bullets.  As he indicated, just fit the bullet to the barrel which is also the case with 4 and 6 grooved barrels.  In the case of my Marlin Micro-groove it does just fine with .309" diameter cast.

Unfortunately, I don't know own a 336 Cowboy .30-30.  I do know 2 fellows that shoot at my club that do and they are fine shooting rifles with cast as Dr. A has proven.

The three Winchester '94's I own shoot cast very well also.

One suggestion I would make, is that for best accuracy on the average try  finding a lever action rifle that doesn't have barrel bands.  Rifles with barrel bands can be made to shoot better, though,  by creating a little clearance between the band's and the barrel, allowing the  barrel to float somewhat.

Here's a 336A

I have one of these WInchester Centennial Rifles and it is a shooter with cast.   http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976554125.htm

Thanks for all the info, guys.  I lucked into a 94 Win. NRA Centennial musket.  26" bbl.  In the process of putting Lyman reciever sights on and getting cases and bullets ready.
Thanks again,
Clyde

Dr. A,
To what diameter are you sizing the Lyman cast bullets. I have a 30/30CB; glad I got it when I did, since they are no longer available.
What powders worked well for you with this bullet? Thanks for your time.
