Howdy -
My son is moving to NE Arkansas (Walnut Ridge) to teach college and I am wondering if there is any good varmit shooting around that area. I would imagine maybe chucks for sure, but what about other varmits? How far do you have to go from there to find prairie dogs? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what varmints they have in northeastern Arkansas, but to find prairie dogs you have to go at least to the Texas or Oklahoma panhandles or western Kansas.

I am suprised I am the first southerner to reply to this. Some of the best "varmint" hunting in the world can be found there in the form of squirrels. Not only can you eat these "varmints" but they are alot more difficult to shoot with a rifle than any praire dog. Take a .22 long rifle and/or a .22 pistol and he will be left wondering why he hadn't given this a try before. IMO, squirrel hinting is alot more satisfying than praire dog hunting.

Steve, I live about 15 miles from Walnut Ridge & in fact my wife works at
the Williams Baptist Physical Plant Office. I live South of Pocahontas, Ar.
where the Ozarks begin. The habitat is very diverse. The Walnut Ridge
area & Eastward is Farm country with wooded and swampy river bottoms.
West of the Black River bottoms is Ozarks & is rugged and wooded to
Oklahoma. As RonF said we are to far East for PDogs. Our main varmit is
coyotes. We also shoot alot of crows. Groundhogs are making a comeback after being devastated by a severe flood & coyotes.

Hi yes we have alot of coyotes but they are some times hard to call in we have alot of gray and fox {red) squirrels and they are good to eat VM

Yes, you are right about the squirrels. I need to look at the Ar. regs. for
this year & make sure that the Spring season starts at the same time
as normal. I sometimes hunt some big, open timber in the Black River
Bottoms that allows me fairly long shots with my .17hmr.
I have seen alot of armadillos get blown up when they step into a field at
long range. I don't see anything in the regs. about this so I guess they are
stepping on land mines. Well I guess it is either that or the highway.

Hi Season open Yesterday for the bushy tails and the other things you are talking about i have killed them with my 22 250 22 mag 300 wby 50 cal ML and my 10ga i hate the hole diggers VM

Dont mean to hijack your threadm but I live in NE Arkansas and would like a little help from my neighbors, maybe

I would really like to meet someone who could show me hands on how to hunt coyotes, watching a video isnt the same as being around a person who can teach.

Hi BKS how far r you from Melbourne or Batesville my coyote hunting buddy lives in Eveining Shade he had some howling behinde his house Late Friday before dark he said he glab his camo and 22 250 and Fox Pro caller and headed out and turn on a Squirrel in distress and the field the grass was high in places and they about ran over him he said he couldnt get a shot because of the high grass this fall we can go if you want to try coyote hunting out i have a extra gun in a 223 or 22 250 or 25 06 if you need to use one VM

Hi crows are fun to hunt too me and my coyote hunting buddy killed 85 crows one Saturday we had to stop at 2:00 pm to we could go to work man we had gun and we got to do alot of shooting lol but now alot of people crow hunts and places they are some smart crows VM

I live over in West Memphis it is about 80 miles I guess. It doesn't have to be this year but next year I would really like to learn to hunt them. Our club in south AR is overrun with them, the guys next door run them in a fox pen with their dogs.

I just bought a Bushmaster Varminter and have a few other suitable rifles, just need someone to show me the ropes.
