Need a small rifle for motorcycle carry
« on: February 20, 2005, 10:54:29 AM »
Been thinking of caring a small rifle in my motorcycle saddlebag. I have a contender but don't want to beat it up. There are handi rifles and rossis at the pawn shops for $100 but the barrels are to long. Kel-tec makes a folding rifle for $300 that is 16 inchs folded but I wonder if a plastic gun could take the vibration. I have a think gun bag to carry it in. Do any of you know anyone that can do a good job cutting a barrel and moving the sights back?

Have you considered a CZ-52?  Cheap well made pistol, very powerful.  A freind of mine on another forum carries one on his bike in case he ever gets in trouble with other bikers.  It is his opinion that the 7.62x25 will put a nice hole in the toughest engine block for a hasty retreat without being followed.
....make it count

How about a takedown .22 like a model 39A Marlin? They're pretty compact when disassembled.

Survival rifles like Henry's that fit in the stock.

I want a short take down rifle because 16 inchs is about all that will fit my hard saddlebags and because if I leave the state of GA and a Police officer happens to find a firearm in the bike I belive the rifle will be legal in more states than a handgun. I have a concealed weapons permit in GA and am a ex police officer myself. Just trying to stay legal if possible. Someone used to make a single shot pistol that would shoot a 410 or 45 pistol round. I bought one for $50 at a gun show. Seems they made a rifle also.

I remember seeing a little winchester 92 take down in .44-40 years ago that had been shortened to 16". However the action and stock 1/2 may be a little longer? for your bags. I think one of the Italians or Rossi, make a take down in a  moden .357 and/or .44mag. With a  short barrel and tang peep, it would be a handy travel rifle here. As would the takedown Marlin .22's. Tho having a firearm for self defence or carrying a handgun is not permitted by law Down Under. Not sure how willing a would be attacker would wait for you to assemble it. You may need some harsh language to fill in time... Naturally it need not be unassembled during your travels when in bed or your room. However if it is for fun, shooting some game for the pot and recognising the limitations of assembling a take down if called for in self defence.  The levers are a good fast shooting choice.

powhs, There is a federal law now which allows all honorably retired Police Officers who are licensed in their home state and who meet the criteria to lawfully carry a handgun in all states. There are some restrictions and criteria to be met but you may very well fit into it.
I posted about it several months ago and met with stiff opposition and some very strong feeling against the law from non LE people on this forum who want to carry nationwide also but the law is there for us that qualify.
Also a H&R "Survivor" in .45-.410 comes in nickel or blue and can be set up with a synthetic or wooden stock. The barrel comes at 20" and is rifled with a screw in choke for shotshell use. Since it is rifled you should be able to have it shortened to the minimum for rifle barrels. If you carried it in 2 pieces and needed it in a hurry you would just have to slap the barrel onto the reciever with no forearm and fire .45 LC's out of it. It is a very strong and reliable action and you could load the .45's hot if you wanted to....seems to fit the bill you are looking for, if you really think you have to carry a rifle for protection....<><....

And by the way, if you don't like the looks of the "Survivor" stock, any H&R/NEF stock will bolt right on instead....

How about an M6 survival gun. single shot 22, 22mag or 22 hornet over 410. Folds in 1/2, ammo storage in stock. I think barrel length is 16" and the stock about the same. My brother has used his (22 hornet) on coyotes
out past 200 yards and I've scrached out a couple grouse on the wing. Forgot to mention, ALL steel.
Just another worthless opinion!!

You didn't mention intended purpose, But maybe a NEF cut to 16.5 inches and resighted would do the trick, It would be real handy and able to take deer. Rugers 10/.22 can be made into a folding gun if your looking for a rimfire. There's also the Marlin papoose takedown autoloader. 8)

TM7 I have been looking into the Taurus 63 myself. Have a June 03 issue of American Rifleman that has an ad for them on the back cover with Taurus Tang Sight installed. When I checked their website they list the tang sight as fitting the M-62 M-72 and M-172 only so I`m confused as well on that one. POW

The Kel Tec isn't a bad deal at all!  The "plastic" is strong, yet flexible enough to survive a 3-foot drop on concrete froma range bench when folded up(don't ask)...

AND, because the gun is un-firable when in the folded position, it will keep you out of many of the "legal" issues.

I recently bought one, and got the stock extenion and picatinny rail mounted.  I bought it primarily for a plinker/camper/bike gun as well.  It's nice and light, very reliable (so far) and fits in a saddle-bag almost like it was MADE TO.

Shop around though.  You may be able to find it a little cheaper.  I got mine for $260 NIB from a pawn shop.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

"Motorcycle" carry rifle...
« Reply #13 on: March 28, 2005, 04:14:41 AM »
If I was looking for a plinking rifle that I wanted to take with me, I'd get a Browning .22 autoloader, or a Winchester 9422 (they takedown), or a Marlin 39M (they takedown), or perhaps one of the Taurus Winchester '06 repro pumps (they takedown).

If I was looking for a defensive weapon to carry that I could put in firing condition in short order but that was normally disassembled to avoid firearms law hassles, I'd look at a Kel-Tec Sub9 or Sub40 with the grip for the magazine of my choice (Glock, S&W, Beretta -- I'd choose Glock just because there's so many mags out there). It takes about a second to unfold the gun, another second to slap a mag in and cycle the action, and you're up and running.

Firing .40 S&W/180gr hollow points out of a 16" rifle barrel will give you better-than-10mm performance with almost no recoil. Firing 9mm/124gr hollow points out of a 16" rifle barrel will give you better than +P+ performance and absolutely no recoil. If your main concern is two-legged varmints then the Kel-Tec is a good choice... and no, I would NOT get a single-shot for self-defense unless you are good enough to get all of the bad guys to stand in line and you never miss.

Yes, the Kel-Tec costs more than a Handi-Rifle. I, for one, don't try to save money on defensive firearms, medical care, climbing rope, and other life-saving equipment.
