I  am heading  out  in  now  less  than  30 days for  a  Black bear  Hunt  with  Jim Shockeys' outfit on Vancouver Island; and  was  curious  if  any of  you  have  experienced that, or  had  insights  as  to what  we  can  expect?

Thanks

No idea what he's like to hunt with, but he makes some nice hunting videos.  He hunts everything with a muzzleloader.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I don't know alot about Shockey's deal other than Vancouver Island has some big bears.  Like Prince of Wales and a number of other islands in that region, your goal should be 20"+ skulls and bears that tip the scales at 500lbs+.

Oh yea, expect rain every day...

Please don't be offended in any way, it is not my intention at all, I just find your question rather odd.

Frankly, having worked for several outfitters and having several outfitters as very good friends, if you were their client, they would be pissed at themselves and/or their people that you were on here asking this question.  You should have received tons of documentation, verbal communication and video.

You are paying for the man's expertise during your hunt and before your hunt.

Call him and ask...  Believe me, he will more than happy to answer all of your questions, besides, it is part of what you are paying for...

Spyro, if  you  find  my  question "odd", I  find  that  even  more  perplexing. I dont  see it  as  odd at  all to  ask  if someone  has  experienced something  I  have  not. No  offenese,  but getting  something  from a  previous customer  is  a  lot  different than  getting  it  from an  outfitter. The  information  I  am  looking  for is things  like  that  were  posted,  "it  rains  there  frequently"  so  be  prepared. I  am  by NO  MEANS  questioning  the  outfitter, if  I  did,  I  most  certainly  would  not  have  paid  the  money  to go.

blairstev, I do the same thing. I like to here from others that have experience with a certain outfitter. Sure the outfitter is going to tell you what you want to here.  :-D

Then we were on different wavelengths...  when you said "had insights as to what we can expect?", it came across to me like you really didn't have much communication with the outfiiter.  Like a friend or some like that actually booked the trip for your entire party.

Now, I understand what you were after...

The transporter that I use in SE Alaska has a 15+ page outline that he sends to all clients.  It works out great since I can just send it to the guys that go on my weeks.  It has equipment lists, a typical day, physical conditioning and etc on it.  If you'd like, I could FAX you the relavant portions.

Prince of Wales and Vancouver Island are essentially the same deal.  Although I believe that your hunt will be land based rather than ocean based.  Most of your hunting should be glassing clear cuts, salt flats, meadows and etc from around 11am to Midnight.

You can stalk them so shots will average between 50 yards and 150 yards.  Just prepare yourself for the size of these bears, 500+ pound and over 7' is the norm.  They top off at 800lbs and 9'.  Think Griz sized.

Again, like I said, expect rain every day...   I keep a little lens cloth in a dry pocket so I can wipe my scope lens off prior to a stalk/shot.

Also, I don't know what he recommended for footwear but I use a fresh pair of socks every day and I am wearing hip boots.  If you are wearing regular boots take 2 pairs of socks for every day.  If you are going to wear chest waders, take something like lotrimin or tenactin and pre-medicate for wader rot in the groin and foot areas.

I'll be hunting Prince of Wales April 23th - April 30th and hunting British Columbia May 1st - May 8th.  Who knows, I might even run into you at an airport or something...

Again Boone & Crockett Awards animals are the norm on Vancouver Island and that general region.  Shockey is a good outfitter from what I hear and runs a quality camp.

PS.  If you want a color phase black bear, on vancouver island and that coastal/island area in general, your options are Black or Black.
