H&R 088 410 SHOTGUN

I have a H&R 410 MDEL 088 in pieces and am wondering if its possible to put a 22 hornet barrel on it or maybe a 243 barrel on it to make it a rifle instead of a shotgun? I already have a 410 shotgun don't need another one.

H&R /NEF will not fit a barrel to that frame. There are some of us who ignore the warnings of H&R and fit other barrels to shotgun receivers. We do this to our own perril if you will.

Are the frames different? The look the same I have not personally looked at them side by side to compare.I would appreciate any info.Thanks.

I would encourage you to read this and form your own opinion. Keep in mind some centerfire barrels were fitted to sb1 frames before NEF took over and said it could not be done

 Thanks for all your help.Very good information.I guess I need to find out at what pressure a 22 hornet is at and then decide whether or not I am going to do it.

The strength of the action is not the only consideration of course.  You will also have to see if the barrel fits properly, or if it needs some 'smithing' for it to fit snug.  Same as switching any other rifle barrels back and forth on receivers.  You might get lucky.  I tried my 7.62x39 barrel on my 12 gauge receiver....but this was only with light loads, worked fine.  A 12 gauge shot-gun is ceratinly NOT a Low Pressure firearm.....I have no doubt that many of the lower pressure centerfires would work.....  For the sake of Liability though, I doubt that NEF would encourage this.  I doubt if Graybeard or GBO would endorse it either, for the same reasons.  Just make sure that whatever you do...Do it safely.  Check and compare pressures of the cartridge.  P.S.....the 410 receiver is identical and the same strength as a 20 or 12.

Compared to any centerfire rifle cartridge, all shotgun gauges are low pressure! See the SAAMI MAPs at the link below.

The question is where that pressure is applied. If all that pressure was coming straight back there would be alot of one armed ex shooters.  :P

I have already checked it out. The 22 Hornet has 41000 cup and the 410 has 13500 cup too much difference for me to mess with.I will have to find another route to take to get a 22 Hornet.I am not able to purchase one out right as of now. I have limited funds and I thought this would work.I have a 22 magnum Marlin 783 I will look into maybe trying to have rechambered and bolt modified to shoot 22 Hornet.Thanks for all your help

I suppose it wont make any difference for you to know that H&R used to put that barrel on the topper. Crazy buggers they were.

H&R has some other similar barrel fitting querks, they won't fit a .25-06 barrel, or any high pressure caliber for that matter, to any SB2 frame made before 1999, even to a frame that came with one on it originally!! Those barrels marked with asterisks in the accessory barrel list are the high pressure calibers, although there are some errors in the list. Not all of the .243 barrels are marked, the .500 S&W should be marked as it has a higher SAAMI MAP than the .450 Marlin that is marked!! ::)

I would think the back thrust on the hornet would be very light.  I can't see it hurting a SB1 frame.

I will not say you should do it but many here have fired a .22 Hornet barrel off of a Model 88 frame with no problems, myself included. Just go slow and watch for any signs of problems. You should see none. Welcome aboard bobby964 and Merry Christmas....<><.... :)
