Andrew - it may not be the sights on that rifle. It may be the stock impacting or pushing on the barrel. My brother once picked up a M44 that shot the same way you describe yours and one look down the barrel channel showed the stock was bearing on the barrel. So, We relieved the barrel channel, bedded the action and free floated the stock and she shot to poi at 100 yds with some very nice groups using good ammo. It did not take a lot of work as those rifles are very simply put together. You may want to look to the fit of the wood to the metal before you start playing with the sights. You might get it to shoot where you want it to but your groups will most likely not improve until you straighten out that barrel channel and bed the action. HTH. Mikey.
