questions on post-fire stainless contender
« on: March 17, 2005, 05:12:30 PM »
Does anyone feel there are significant differences in the quality between pre-fire and post-fire contenders? If so, what do you feel those differences are? Let's not take into account the ugly "laughing cougar" head on the frame. The less said about that the better. Are the stainless models any more/less valuable than the blued? The reason I ask is because today I saw a stainless post-fire contender with 14" 7-30 Waters barrel in a small gunshop I stop into from time to time. It had a Pachmayr grip and forend, hammer extension, and a scope base and rings (but no scope). The grip looked less than new, I guess "faded" might be the best way to describe it, but otherwise the gun appeared in good shape.  I had to judge these things through the glass of the display case as the gentleman working the counter was busy with another customer and I had to leave in order to get home in time to get my daughter off the school bus. $279 was the price on the tag. If the good people of this forum feel that this is a gun worth looking into further, I'll make the drive back to the gunshop as soon as I can. Please share your thoughts or opinions.

Thank you for the replies. I think I'll try and get back there tomorrow before I have to go to work. If it has no obvious problems and the trigger is anything like the one on the frame I currently own (blued model made in 1975) then I'm probably going to make the purchase. I have bought several guns there in the past and may even be able to get them to discount it slightly.

That is good price.  To answer your question, I have pre and post fire frames and I cannot tell a difference in the quality or construction.

Went back to get a look at the gun. Prior to going, I was thinking how I really didn't want to spend my meager "gun fund" that I've been accumulating due to the fact that there are several gun shows coming up in the next month. Then I thought about the Savage 110 package rifle in 7mm mag that I bought last year and have never fired. I took it along with me and after deciding that the contender was worth getting, I asked the shop owner if he would be interested in taking in a trade. Turns out that we ended up making an even swap. The best part is that I bought that rifle on clearance from Wal-Mart for $125. Didn't have any real need for it when I bought it, but I couldn't not buy it at that price. So in essence, I wound up getting a complete stainless contender for an investment of only $125. Even a blind chicken gets a kernel of corn once in a while.

All I can say is Wow! Good job. If you wanted you could get your money back just selling off the barrel.
