Hello everyone,

I have a little problem I would like to run by you to get your input on. I purchased a new Buff. Classic and then ordered the upgrade rear sight from H&R. The other day I tried to put the new sight on and the srew holes on top of the barrel were not deep enough to take the new screws that came with the sight. I tried the old sight screws (williams sight) and of course they are too short. The problem appears that the holes were not drilled or tapped deep enough. Has anyone out there heard of this problem? Do you have suggestions of how to fix it? And what if I just keep the factory Williams sight? Will it be sufficient enough for me to shoot deer loads out to about 150 yards?

I really like this site!! You guys are the reason I bought this Buff. Classic! Although I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, I look forward to it and can't wait to share my results with you.

I thought the same thing and there is a review at Midway stating the same thing....but that wasn't the case with mine, the screw holes were full of loctite, dug it out with an awl and it was good to go. I put a little acetone in the holes to soften the loctite, don't think it did much good, but it didn't hurt, either.

I've got the same problem with the screw holes being too shallow. I'll have to shine a bright light down there and see if there is any loctite to be picked out. Otherwise, I guess I'll have to shorten the screws.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to shorten the screws?

I'd take a good look at the holes before I shortened the screws. The holes should look mirror shiny in the bottom when scraped, the loctite will look dull. It takes at pretty good amount of force to break the loctite up, the sewing awl worked best along with a small flat bladed screwdriver. Once it broke a hole into the loctite, it's plain to see that the holes were a lot deeper than they looked.

To shorten the screws I have used a dremel fiber cutoff tool before with good luck, but it takes some finesse to get the threads cleaned up without a nut to run on the bolt before you cut it off to work as a die.

You're right! That loctite is pretty tough stuff. I was able to pick is all out and the Smith Ent. sight mounted perfectly. Now I'm ready to season the barrel and spend some quality time on the range.

:grin: Hey Thanks Guys,

I finally got around to taking the sight off again. Just as you suggested, I dug out the loctite. I put the new H&R Williams site on and it fits right. Now, all I have to do is sight it in. Does anyone have this sight on their guns? If so, how does it shoot with it? Just curious as to what to expect.

I don't know what front sight you have but I have the rear sight that you are talking about and the globe front sight and it shoots really well. I had about given up on iron sights but this combe has me shooting like a kid again. I can see these sights and causes me to focus well on the target. I have only had one session with it so far but I love it. I am just starting to load black powder cartridges for it. In fact I loaded my first batch last night. I loaded the 500 grain Government RN. Now I can't wait for a decent range day again. It turned cold in ND AGAIN!!!!!!

I still have the stock "globe" sight on the front of it. I've read quite a few threads on this site and have learned alot. I eventually got brainwashed into buying a new BC. I also read where one of the guys suggested buying the upgraded Williams sight from H&R as well. So, I did just about everything that everybody else suggested except handload. I guess that'll be next. I've already bought the dies. Now I'm picking up equipment here and there. By summer, I'll be looking for loads on this site. From what I remember there are quite a few.

So, please let us know how your new loads shoot with your upgraded rear sight. I, for one, am very curious and I'm sure others are too.
