Building a 7mm STW

this summer i'm planning on buying one of the Savage rifle combos in .300 Win. Mag. what i want to know is if in the future i decide to rebarrel it to 7mm STW, how much trouble will it be? from looking at cartridge drawings it appears the STW is a just a .300 necked down, so no mods to the bolt or magazine would be required. or would it just be easier to start with a 7mm Rem. Mag. and re-chamber?

The 7mmSTW is the length of a 300 Weatherby or H&H rather than the shorter 300 WinMag. There may be feeding issues going to the longer round.  Have you checked the Savage webpage for versions of the rifle that may be made in 7mmSTW?  The STW is probably a round destined to fade away.  Few rifles are being made and ammo is getting harder to find and there are fewer selections.. The reasons are simple, few and minimal gains over the ubiquitous 7mmRemMag..  and the 7mmUltraMag..

I have a 7 STW and really like it. Yeah factory ammunition is a little hard to find sometimes and factory ammunition is not much hotter than a 7magnum but if you handload, you can really outrun it.
 The 7STW is an 8MM Remington Magnum necked down.

 If I coud build a custom bolt gun it would probably be an STW.

I like my STW. I got one of the last Savage 116 weather warriors in this cartridge, they dropped it 2 to 3 years ago.
Same amount of factory stuff out there as there was 3 years ago when I decided add this cartridge to the arsenal.
Remington has 1 loading
Winchester has 3
Federal has 2 and they just added the 160 gr. accubond bullet.
Seem to sell just fine but not something you'll find at Wal Mart.
Savage doesn't sell a magnum length action so the feed ramp and magazine follower must make the difference.

You are right about the Savage action. No machine work to convert to a long magnum..  You are right as to the cartridges parentage but the 300H&H is the parent of the 300 Weatherby and the 8mmRemMag...

I just bought a ton of reloading stuff at a garage sale.  Included for free was a complete set of RCBS dies and a Stoney Point gauge for the 7mm STW do you want them?  I have no need for them.
