When is your Growing Season ?
« on: March 09, 2005, 09:31:02 PM »
Around here it begins around May 1st, even though cold resistant vegetables can be put in as soon as the ground can be worked.  Southern States should already be beginning to plant.

The old Wives Tale says Root crops planted on the Full Moon and above ground plants on a New Moon.   Or visa-versa.  I don't recall in detail  everything my Grandparents used to say, but they did go by the Moon phase.

A late frost can sometimes hit here in early to mid May.   Last year was bad for lingering cold weather in spring, delaying most above ground gardening until June and this year doesn't seem much better so far.  More snow tomorrow from a Canadian Clipper pushing through.

The season usually ends with the first frost in October.

Here in Florida we can plant something all year long if you know what to plant.

As far as the full moon goes, get yourself a copy of the Old Farmer's Almanic every year as soon as they're avalible. they have dates there for root crops, above ground crops, transplanting, or anything else you might need.

TM7,

You live on Long Island?  I am guessing you meant Long Island (LI).

I have spent many hours on the L.I.E., the Sunrise and Jericho Tpk.

I've been from Staten Island to Montauk, Riverhead and just about everywhere in between including Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.  I have even experienced Gridlock on more than one occasion.

I like northern LI and the Hamptons the best.

The people out in the Hamptons always treated me good.  Maybe because I had something they wanted.

As for LI, I like the northern part better, above the Jericho, Laurel Hollow the best.   And the Pines/Reservation second.  I'm more into remote settings.

Sandy soil on the Island.   Should be good for Tomato's, Watermelons and Cantalopes there.

It's around the first of May thru early October, depending on what you are growing.
