Semi-auto hunting caliber AK legalities
« on: March 09, 2005, 10:28:30 AM »
After nearly 60 years of advancement, the AK action has been used for practically every type of longarm, and now several quality hunting rifles are based on the AK design, specifically the Saiga and VEPR (named for game animals.)

Some states don't allow semi-auto rifles for hunting.  Some do but have configuration restrictions, ie features of the old dead Clinton Ban.  Some just ban the AK design, including Saiga rifles, even though they're functionally the same as a Remington 7400.

I'm looking to build an AK based hunting rifle in 444 Marlin, and would like to know where it's legal to have and to hunt with.  Particularly with certain features, since the trigger group used in a thumbhole or pistol gripped version is far better than in the one with the classic curved stock.

I was also thinking the same things about a Saiga 12ga shotgun.

All I know so far is that PA allows only semi-auto shotguns, no rifles, and that anything AK is illegal in CA.  Also that NY has the AWB copied so only a stock Saiga shotgun would be legal there, though a p-gripped rifle with solid stock would be ok too.

Capacity is a non issue, mags are easy to replace and block.

Now you're talking a real hog gun,444 semiauto. If you build this one, keep in touch, and tell about all the problems ( if any) . This is my dream gun,BAR in 444 or 450 Marlin. I just rechambered my NEF single shot to 445 super mag and I'm very happy with it,and it still shoots the 44 mag ammo very well.  Digger

Got the donor gun, now I'm trying to decide between modifying a Winchester barrel or a Marlin barrel, and whether stainless steel is worth consideration.

You might find a barrel on the H@R/ NEF classifieds here. You can rechamber the 44 mag barrel to 444 or like mine,445 supermag. Digger

I have a Remington 7400......the AK is a much better design!

That aside, my 7400 is politically correct.......your AK....is a bad communist designed "assault" rifle made just for bad people to do bad things to good people...........

As marlin probably makes the bulk of .444's,.....I'd have to go with the marlin barrel........

Hope is all fits together and works just the way you want it to.......by the way.......build 2!

I doubt anything could beat the price of the barrels from Numrich.  I've used one on a 35 Rem project with success so far.  The 444 Marlin one should be far easier to space.
