First blood with .308
« on: March 20, 2005, 02:27:12 AM »
:D Just a little bit ago I decided to go out yote hunting.  I looked through my gun cabinet and decided I would take my .308 survivor.  I just figured today was as good as any to see if it would do the trick.  I took off and was driving down the road to my farm when something stuck out, something different than usual.  I backed up and pulled out my binoculars, It was what I thought it was a good size coyote about 350 yds.  I got out of my car and made my way to the field crouching down and moving quickly and carefully.  I made it where I could see him in the scope, 6x power seem to low so I turned it up to 18x that put things into perspective.  trying to calm down enough to stop moving I took deep breaths when the cross hairs came across his boiler room when I touched off and sent 150 grains of jacked lead his way.  I never seen a coyote spin so many times before giving up the ghost.  Just thought you guys  would like to hear of my success with the .308.  I haven't had time to work up a good load yet for this thing but the winchester cxp2 soft points seem to be working pretty good for now       Have good day

Sounds like you ruined his whole day  . It sounds also like your 308 shoots pretty well. The 308 it not a handi that I have yet. I do have a 308 Browning A-Bolt light weight Stalker. I really like the caliber and I shot the barrels out of two of them while shooting steel silhouettes quite a few years back. I have taken to many deer to count with them as well. I think the 308 is about the perfect deer rifle or for all North America game.
shot placement is everything.

It must be something in the air I nailed one (coyote)  this morning also. Had my 204 with me on our lease while walking down a dirt road he came out in front of me about 75 to 85 yrds as if chasing something he wen into the woods and I lost sight of him I took a few more steeps and dang if he didn't come back this time I already had the gun up. First shote was somewhat hurried and broke his hip as he was facing away next broke his back which finley stopped him then but one in his head. Used remington 40gr think I like the hornadys better. I am sorry but it wasn't a hindi but a savage. 8)
