re: Lee factory crimp die
« on: March 18, 2005, 12:28:13 AM »
Hello...

I purchased a 3-die set of Lee dies for the .303 British cartridge.  I have not used them yet.

Theoretically, I would guess that the Factory Crimp Die for the .303 British would work for the 7.7 Jap cartridge, which I also reload for.  Can I use the crimp die for both these cartridges?  Anyone with the relevant experience?

Thanks much,
Gary

I doubt that it would work, but if you don't mind possibly ruining a jap case give it a try. I would back the die out so you are not resizing all the neck, be carefull you don't get into the shoulder. As I recall Lee charges $50 for a custom made collet die set.

If you are only talking about the FCD it may work. Do both cases have the same length and neck shape? You will have a problem if one is longer than the other.

I have read on the web lately that some folks use a washer as a spacer for using a other FCD. I the case I read it was using a 7.62x54 FCD for the 7.5x 55 Swiss. Since the Jap case is longer than the 303 the washer method may work. I have never tried it but it was reported it works. I guess the only way to know is to try it. Jim

Jim,
I did something similar. I picked up a FCD for the WSM case cheaply, and shortened the bottom of the sliding part for use on the RSAUM case. It worked perfectly. I haven't yet tried the short die/washer thing... Yet. I think it should work, but it seems like it would be extreemly S - L - O - W. Where possible, I'll stick to shortening the collet, or bite the bullet, and spring for the $25 custom FCD. It won't break the bank, but is still a PITA.

From what the guy said when you put the brass in the shell holder you just slide the washer over the brass as you are doing it yea a extra step but until you bought the right FCD it would work. Jim
