.22 Cheetah MK I
« on: March 15, 2006, 09:04:20 AM »
Anyone reload for this critter?

I have the barrel reamed and some brass formed (not fire formed yet) but wanted some help on starting loads and fire forming tips.

Can I fire form this brass without shooting a bullet?
If I can what powder can I use?
Will TP/ or Beeswax be enough force to blow out the shoulder?

The rifle is built to shoot 52-60grain bullets anyone have a starting load or powder recommendation?

Thanks Warf

Yup i have a CHeetha MK1, had it built in 1995..

1- Fireforming, thats the easy part. Use any primer you have about, small pistol or rifle, 6.0gr.of Red Dot, then just fill the case with
cornmeal, and holding the case upright take a block of paraffin an push it into the case mouth. You just want enough paraffin to keep
   the cornmeal in..Shoot um..

2- Inside neck ream, or outside neck turn?. One of these must be done..

3- Powder, H4350 works for me..

4- Starting load-

   Brass-RP 308 BR
   Primer- RP 7 1/2 BR
   Powder- 48.0grs. H4350
   Bullet- 55 gr Hornady V-MAX
   Velocity- 3970 fps.

Thank you very much.

That was the way I read to do it on another site but wasn't comply sure. They were forming brass that didnt have much of a shoulder.

As for the load sounds great I only seen 3 loads for this cartidge on Reloading bench site.

Thanks Again

warf73,

The 22 CHeetah was developed by Jim Carmichel, and is based on the
Remington 308 BR case (with a small primer pocket).

What you have there is more likely known as a 220 Jaybird, first
developed by Kenny Jarret in 1985 on the Win.243 case .

The starting load, I gave you, may NOT BE SAFE in your firearm.

Rowdy, you are right to point out that your load may not be safe in another & especially in this case.
I believe the rifle in question may be a Handirifle, I like them & have 2 currently, but they have no way to relieve pressure in the event of a case failure like some bolt guns like a Rem. or Savage.
This is why with wildcats that I want to push, I use Rem. 700 actions.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

nomosendero,

Yes sir, Model 700 actions are all I use. Years ago while working up
a new load for a 8mm Rem Mag Mod. 700 BDL, I had a case seperate just
above the belt. Now i'v had  two other case seperations, one was a
22-250 and one a 223 both Mod 700 actions. But they were nothing compared
to the 8mm with 84grs of Reloder 22 trying to burn allaround my head.
This was at the local gun range with my friend, George, he turns an is
like " What the  hell was that" an I'm still all dazed and confused," I
dont know but I feel like someone just kicked the **** out of me."

OK warf tell us about your new toy..

 22 Cheetah
Historical Notes:

The 22 Cheetah was developed by Jim Carmichel, shooting editor of Outdoor Life magazine and Fred Huntington of RCBS fame. It appears to have originated in the late 1970's. The cartridge is essentially a full length Remington 308 BR case, with a smaller primer pocket, necked down to 22 caliber, but with the shoulder moved forward. What you end up with is a variation of the 308 Winchester necked down to 22, but using a special match case. This is not exactly new because there are in existence several slightly different versions made by necking the 243 Winchester case down, and these date back to the early 1960's. However, the 22 Cheetah is an original with regard to the 308 BR case and its smaller rifle primer pocket.

4D Products said that most everyone that is using/making the 22 Cheetah is using either .308Win or .243Win brass, because the inability to get .308BR brass.

My 22 Cheetah is built on a H&R receiver.
The donor barrel is a 22-250 24” fluted bull barrel with 1:12 twist.
