« on: January 04, 2005, 01:12:56 PM »
i have recently traded for a smith shotgun model 916-a. im not familiar with s&w shotguns at all and would like to know a little history and maybe a approximate value on this one. it is short barrelled riot gun with a full length tube magazine and rifle sights. it has a steel receiver and a oak or walnut pistol grip stock with a cushion buttpad.looks like a well made gun. anybody know anything about these or what they are worth?

The 20 inch barrel 916 in excellent condition has a book value of $140.
Maybe no one answered because no one likes to be the bearer of bad news. Worse yet, everyone hates a "know-it all". Thats what they call you when you give the right answer, but it wasn't the one they wanted to hear! :-D

Which is the takedown version.  The gun seems to be fairly well made, I've had no problems with mine.  They are about worthless when it comes time to sell them though.  Use it and enjoy it.

I have one in the back of my safe, was my first new shotgun many moons ago. Couldnt afford an 870 back then. No problems of any kind with it, but as others said they dont resell very high.

I had a 916 back when they first came out. It was the cheapest pump shotgun I could find. It only has one action bar, so it hangs up occasionally till you get used to it and the fore end nut kept shooting loose till I epoxied it on. But it was one shootin' sumbitch, I couldn't miss with it on doves. It fit me like part of my body. Like a fool, I sold it to get a Mossberg. Been thru a blue ton of shotguns since then, nothing I could hit consistently with. About a year ago, I bought a .410 bolt shotgun in a pawn shop for my nephew for $50 and they threw in a free 12ga - a 916 someone had chopped to min legal length, but it didn't work. After tweaking the shell catch(NOTE: you MUST!!!!!!!!! take off the buttstock BEFORE trying to remove the trigger group to avoid damaging other internal parts), putting on a $10 buttstock and a $2 front bead, it's an engine of death for dove and quail.
