.308 - Pistol or Rifle?
« on: March 20, 2005, 03:33:05 PM »
I had a factory 308 rifle barrel, and sold it off a while back. The only long guns I have now are in .22. So I've been thinking about the 15" 308 barrel (Encore) and wondering if the rifle would give me anything more - that I would actually miss. Sure some more fps/energy would be great, but I'm not talking 1000yd. shots. Any benefits to the rifle or would I be fine in the pistol barrel?

And it's going to be .308, before y'all start trying to sell me something else. :)

I would have to say, it would be what ever you are more comfortable shooting. The accuracy should be the same, but the shooting ability will be your job. I have gone full circle on Encore pistols and rifles. I started with several Encore pistols from 30-06, 308, 7mm08, 45-70. Now I am back to the rifle barrels. 444 Marlin, 300 Win Mag and 22-250. I have taken game with both, but I seem to lean toward the rifle barrels. I still have Contender pistol barrels though.  :D I know I was not much help, but the decision is yours. Good luck and let us know what you do.  :-)

.308 pistol bbl

Hey---just go ahead and do it!!! My .308 Encore pistol barrel is a 15" factory barrel with "muzzle tamer".  Don't know if it needed the break or not, but I doubt it. Anyway, the accuracy is terrific and power is plenty. The Nosler 150 gr Partitions are the choice for my hunting handloads because of bullet construction--shoots about an inch at 100 yds of the bench. Trajectory at 2550fps ---I use 2" high at 100 yds giving point blank range at 180yds.  The 150 gr Ballistic Tips will give smaller groups as will the Speer 165 gr SP---hard to choose!! I have only used it for deer, but as an all around barrel I think it would be an excellent choice. :-)  :-)  :-) pg

Team Nelson, you've answered your own question- the rifle bbl. will give you more velosity and thus more energy. I could say it one way and you might not be happy, or I could say it the other way and you might not be happy. Like Redhawk 1 says, "it's up to you and only you" as to what makes you happy.  LOL,  Pat
