Would like some info on an Ultra Comp.
« on: March 21, 2005, 02:32:51 AM »
Never seen one before.  Picked up one in a .30-06 this weekend.  It has a 24" compensated heavy barrel, deep blue finish and green camo wood.  Salesman said it was in the inventory when the current shop owner took the store over three years ago.  He added that it may have been a limited edition or special order.

I'm looking for any info that anyone can provide.  Thanks.

Coalminer:  Checked out Grice's this weekend.  Impressive inventory, but very crowded.  Purchased some reloading supplies.  Also checked out the Army/Navy store.  Same crowd, I believe.  Thanks for the tip.

EVOC ONE:

Congrats on your new Handi...your going to like it...I've had both the 270 and the 30-06 Ultra Comp...and they are shooters for sure...they made them for about 3 years in those 2 calibers...they have a actual barrel lenght of 23" plus 1" of muzzle brake...the muzzel brake is threaded on by the way...and it was offered with the green laminated camo stock...they weren't special editions and were cataloged as the rest of the Ultra's

Mine liked the heavier bullet weights and did real well with the 190 grain Hornady's and the 200 grain Nosler partitons in the 30-06...didn't shoot the 270 before selling it off...never could get the barrel to fit on my receivers...but the person I sold it to here has fitted it...and he will be shooting my 30-06 as well...since I sold it to him as well..

They are very loud to bystanders...when fired...just remember that...you won't notice a difference in it...but they will...and you'll find the muzzel brake works very good at reducing recoil and barrel climbing when fired off a rest...the hevier the load...the better it works...

I hope you got a good deal on it... :D

Mac:  I think I did good on the price, but would certainly like an opinion or two.  The asking price was $270, but wound up getting it for $260 + tax.  So $273 OTD.  I looked on the Wally World site and saw their Ultra's go for $230.  In the local shops I cannot recall seeing new Ultra's for less than $259, but often see them in the $280's.

In prior post's I've mentioned of my desire to have a dedicated Ultra Handi to use for 300yrd range shooting and my first choice would have been a .30-06 with a longer than 22" bbl.  I had pretty much decided on the .280 because of its similarities to the .30-06, the 26" bbl and all the input I have recieved here regarding it.  So, when I saw the Ultra Comp it was pretty much what I wanted.  I was unaware that NEF had made such a gun.  Being at the right spot at the right time, I guess.

Thank you for the info.

Congrats on the UltraComp, Evoc One!!! I'm looking forward to handloading that 30-06 bad boy I'm getting from Mac with some 200gr elk buster partition loads!! ......Hopefully I'll get to shoot the .270 UltraComp this week or next weekend. If the weather had been nicer last weekend, I would have taken more guns and shot them all, but as it was, I only shot a couple in the rain....long enough to get my butt wet!

Here are pics of Mac's(soon to be mine :-) ) Ultra Comp...

Thanks Quick.  Appreciate the comments and pictures.  I'm looking forward shooting the Ultra Comp as well.  I was hoping it might shoot the heavier bullets.  In years past I've had some experiance with Sierra 180 and 190 gr HPBT's.  So I hope the Handi will do well with them.  Its been years since I've shot like that, so this is almost a new adventure.

Sure...you can get a regular Ultra Cheaper at Walley World...but you can't get a new in box Ultra Comp...and so what if you paid a-little more for it...you did real good in my opinion...I'd clean that puppy out with a good bore polish or at least Barnes CR-10 before shooting it...I've done that on mine...and it really does help...with the ultras scope rail...just run the screw down till it ALMOST touches...you'll want to see a-little daylight under it when you hold it up to the light...and once there...lock it down...

Good Luck with your new Ultra Comp... :D

Thought you forgot about me.  Crowds pretty bad huh?
I did not make it up, i have heard they get crowded.  Went up one time on Black Friday, everybody heading to their camps, WOW.  My wife about ripped some ladys face off, almost knocked over a rack full of rifles in Bob's. learned my lesson.  Hey, so you got a new toy.  Was looking at some handi's tonight.  Regular .233 and a .223 /.243 super lights.  Juniata is to get a truck load in some time soon.  Want to look at the ultra's amd stainless models before I buy.  Want either a .223 or .243.  You have any of these.

         Type to ya later   Coalminer7

Coalminer:  Apoligies.  Didn't forget you. The home PC took a dump on on Friday.  Needs a  mother board.  Fortunately, its still under warranty.  So I have to wait to get to work to use the computer.

Yea, Grice's was pretty crowded.  We didn't stick around long. Cannot imagine what it must be like on Black Friday.

We stopped at Juniata on the way back.  I was going to get one of those camo-stock shotguns with the medalian in the stock.  But he's raised the prices of those models since the last time I was there.  I know those guns have been there at least two years.  Would be in the area of $160 OTD, on the credit card.  Worked out anyway.  The next shop we stopped at had the Ultra Comp.
