What shall we expect of penetration?
« on: April 15, 2005, 01:20:47 AM »
Just arrived from Africa where I shot 2 Blue Wildebeest (200 meter) and 1 Zebra (130 m) with Nosler Partition 260 gr./375 JDJ.  All penetrated through the animals.

With my .454 and 325 gr. Lyman, I shot one Blue W.beest at 100 m.  The bullet hit the shoulder and it run 180 m.
At 44 m I hit another Blue W. beest in the shoulder, and he run 70 m.
Could not find the bullets - but none of them went through.
Both were stonedead.

My question is:  What can we expect concerning penetration?

I have received a very good price for a buffalo and a hippo - and will do some tests with 380 and 390 gr. bullets for this hunt - because I believe that a bullet which don`t penetrate through a Blue Wildebeest - not can be the right bullet for big game like the abovementioned.

Am I wrong?

I would recommend a hard cast bullet with gas check in your 454 for the buffalo and a hippo. African game have thick hides.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

OK Sverre:  It sounds like you had a good hunt but I would like to ask you a couple of questions:  How large are the Blue Wildebeasts - don't they run to the 1,000 range???

You took two through the shoulder but haven't recovered the bullets - did they pile up somewhere in an off-site joint structure and you just haven't found them yet?  On the one that ran 180m, did the bullet penetrate through the chest and you have just not found it???  What about the 2nd animal??

The 454 takes a 45 caliber slug:  I'm wondering if at 100m that slug had just run out of pentration energy????  I was concerned about the same effect on a boar and Elk hunt last year, so I upgraded my 444 from factory loads to heavy 330 gn hardcast loads (almost 100 grains weight over factory) and did not have a problem with T&T penetration on either animal.

I'm now thinking that if you upgrade to the 380-390 gn bullets in the 454 caliber you should get the additional energy needed for complete penetration.  Is there any way you can compare the penetrability of both the 325 gn loads and the 380-390 grain loads that would approximate penetration on those large animals?  That might help.....

With the JDJ caliber - where did you hit the animals?  The JDJs are hard hitting calibers as I understand them, and the 375 can penetrate significantly - but did you impact heavy bone like the shoulder girdles or did you put it through the chest??   If it was a chest shot I can understand the penetration.  If it was a shoulder shot and you still got T&T penetration then that sure says something for that caliber and load but it may also have a better penetration profile (long and heavy for the bore) than the 325s did in your 454.

Just some thoughts.  HTH.  Mikey.

As much as I love that Lyman 452651 bullet it is kinda short. Short bullets don't penetrate as well as long bullets do. Light doesn't penetrate as well as heavy does. That is why I no longer even own a .454 Casull. I've gone to the .480 Ruger when I want penetration. I use bullets of 420-440 grains and they just keep on keeping on.

Still the Lyman bullet should have exited on a Wildebeast I'd have thought. Did you hit shoulder bone on both sides? Were the bullets "too hard" and did they perhaps shatter? Or too soft so they mushroomed too much stopping penetration?

A good cast bullet should be hard enough so as to not mushroom and yet shouldn't shatter either. Given that composition the Lyman bullet should easily penetrate 4'-5' of muscle and hide but bones are going to limit that some.

"How large are the Blue Wildebeasts - don't they run to the 1,000 range???"

About 400 pounds.

"You took two through the shoulder but haven't recovered the bullets - did they pile up somewhere in an off-site joint structure and you just haven't found them yet? On the one that ran 180m, did the bullet penetrate through the chest and you have just not found it??? What about the 2nd animal??"

They disappered into the viscera.

"With the JDJ caliber - where did you hit the animals? "

Shoulder - and I`m very satisfied with the Nosler.

"Did you hit shoulder bone on both sides?

None of them passed the second ribcage.

"A good cast bullet should be hard enough"
