Recommedations for a hog hunt in Tennessee
« on: January 22, 2005, 02:52:00 AM »
Wife and I were talking last weekend about camping trips that we would like to do next summer. Well she kinda floored me when she said that she wanted to go to Tennessee and while down there she thought for my birthday I should go on a hog hunt. Bless her heart!

So... Any suggestions as to where? I would like to take my Marlin .45-70 and maybe my .44 S&W 629. Are there any guided-game ranch type places that you would recommend?

While were at it what would you recommend for places to see and places to shop for the wife?

Thanks for the help!

I went to Clarkrange TN and it was great but you need to be in good shape
if you are going to run with the dogs.  He does have some ground blinds.
http://www.kenmoody.com/  is the web site for Clarkrange.

You might think about camping in the Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge area of the Great Smoke Mountains National Park.  Crossville is roughly an hour west, but do not give the wife a credit card while in Pigeon Forge.......Loads of outlet malls etc.... ..Smith and Wesson has a fairly nice shop there as well.  It's home to Dollywood.......loads of video arcades, and other tourist traps........Live entertainment but not on the scale of Branson or Nashville........

The Ocoee river area is great camping and rafting, but not much for shopping and is farther from Crossville.  Nashville or Chattanooga has the shopping, as well as nice camping but is farther from Crossville......

Ken Moody at Clarkrange

I would recommend ClarkRange also, that's where I harvested my second hog with a T/C White Mtn. carbine with a Hornady 240 and 90 grains of Pyrodex. Yes you will run with the dogs, unless you are lucky enough to get Angus. He doesn't run much and coughs a great deal due to a 30/30 lodged in his sinus cavity, but what he sees sure makes up for his bad nose. He is a great pointer, a real mutt, but he puts you right on the hog.

KENTDEP ...

I know this post is kind of old but I just now saw it. My brother, my son, and I all hunted at Ken Moody's Clarkrange Lodge and we had the time of our lives. We each got a boar weighing at least 220 lbs and my boar weighed right at 245. Everything was as advertised with no surprises. Ken Moody spent quite a bit of time with us telling story after story. They also have a taxidermist right there who did a great job on the two boars we had mounted.

My son and I used our Marlin Cowboy Competition in .45 lc on our hogs and it was a great choice to hunt with. Next time I go, I will use my new SBH Hunter in .45 lc.
