Phenomenal Accuracy from G2!
« on: March 11, 2005, 05:17:32 PM »
Wow!  Put the new 14", blue, 223 Rem barrel on w/ the Nikon 2X and I cannot believe it is so accurate.  Shoot a whooping 4 rounds to get zeroed at 50 yds.  Shoot 10 more rounds and the last 5 are like a .4" hole.  This is using Winny White box 45 grain.  Can this be real??????????

Got home and installed my Bellm oversize hinge pin for even more accuracy, is that possible?

Let us know what the oversized pin did. I'll bet you just made it worse. Thats been my experience with the over sized pins.   KN

If that barrel was mine; I would leave it alone. If you modifty the frame with an oversized pins T/C would not like it. When you sale your barrel or frame some body down the line will be screwed. That is my personal opinion. Twyman

The oversized pins don't need modified guns or barrels to use.  They are made to fit tighter than factory pins and are sold to improve accuracy.  They made no difference in my Contender, just made it harder to change barrels.  I think they may be worthwhile in a well used gun where the hinge is worn.  In a gun in good shape the only benefit may be mental.  If we think it is going to help it may.

Mark A.

I agree with Keith L on the oversized hinge pin.  I have several of them and I can go either way with them.  Maybe it improved accuracy, maybe it didn't.  I guess a person could only tell (and then again only maybe!) by shooting hundreds of groups an do statistical analysis to see if the group inprovement, if it occurred, was substantial...Ain't going there anymore--college is too many years behind me!!!

One thing that I honestly do think helps is the heavier lock-up springs.  I believe I have noticed improvement with them, but only on a couple of barrels--the .223 Remington and the 7-30 Waters.  Good-luck...BCB

I got an older .223 barrel and frame that needed just a bit of TLC.  The other day I shot a 1" group at 200 yards with it while leaning out a window.  These were with handloads but that's about as accurate as I've shot anything - let alone a pistol.

Once again, forum logic and smart rules!

Took the stinkin' over size pin OUT of my T/C.  It was not fun beating the crap out of my new frame to change from 22LR to 223 Rem.  It feels, the frame barrel lock up, no different from the over size to normal pin.  There is NO discernable wiggle.

I'm not sure you could actually feel any "wiggle" between the different pins, yet it probably does tighten things up a bit.  Again, I am uncertain that it ALWAYS improves accuracy.
Here is a link to a website that shows a steel target that I shoot at with all of my handguns/rifles at various ranges.  This one was shoot at with my .223 Remington barrel on my Contender.  It does have the heavier lock-up spring but not the over-sized hinge pin.  This group was honestly shot at 200 yards and it measures right at 1.25".  I was using Hornady 40 grain V-Max and a maximum (?) charge of WC-844.  These .223 Remington barrels will shoot when given the right load.  Good-luck...BCB

BCB:

1.   Nice shootin'!

2. I will try the lock up springs, was an email release on them yesterday and their use yesterday!

Right now it is hard to want to do much to this weapon.  This is the best built, best shooting, most accurate, best trigger pull OOB weapon I have ever had!

The hinge pin thing I think may be overrated. I tried one in the at the time only contender I had (about a 1970 frame) and I just couldn't see a difference in my groups, some will say they help but it just made switching barrels a bugger for me.

Glad to see you got you a good shooter, I've got 3 older frames now, I've got to step up to a G2. I've heard alot about the trigger just not being as good but it sounds like you got a sweet sample with that one.

Keep having fun with it.

I agree, if you have a loose hinge pin, you may need an oversize one, you will know it.  Don't go buy a miracle worker, as it's not.

Mark A. Nice shooting, but with that gun, weren't they supposed to be in the head?   :)

Good Luck with those .223s.  Ground squirrels and prairie dogs should be in full swing shortly.

Incredible, truly incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been messing w/ my T/C G2, changing barrels and scopes and just messing.  Put on an el cheap compact 4 X 32 rifle scope on the 22 LR barrel this am.  Took to range, @ 25 yds, shooting Wolf Match Target in the 14" factory barrel.  Last four shots were a 0.268" group, one single ragged hole, I cannot believe it shoots that well, this is just unreal! :-D
