My first hog with the contender
« on: March 23, 2005, 08:49:28 AM »
This is the first time I took my contender hunting.  Talk about good luck!

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/album_pic.php?pic_id=826

After running across a large canyon to intercept these pigs…

My foot fell silently on 30 years of fallen pine needles damp from yesterday’s rain as I stepped into the redwood grove.  A little knoll separated me from a deep draw.  I caught a glimpse of the backs of two pigs as they trotted up the hill trying to avoid us.  They stopped, but their bodies were eclipsed by the little knoll.  I focused my attention on the closer, black pig.  All I could see was a fist sized portion of his head and a slightly larger portion of his back.  It looked like two black islands floating on a sea of green grass.  I eased back the hammer on my contender and aimed at a spot between his eye and ear.  The gun recoiled and blocked my view.  When the gun came back down and my view was no longer obstructed I saw 4 quivering legs sticking straight up in the air.  I had hit him with a 120 gr Nostler Ballistic tip that had exited my 10” 7mm TCU barrel.  The bullet passed through his head and lodged above the opposite shoulder.  I have a picture of the recover bullet if anyone is interested.  I think this hog was just shy of 200 pounds

Good shooting Justin. Good example of the importance of shot placement. I get a kick out of many gun writers saying you need big magnums for hogs. What you really need is to be able to shoot well. Regards, Byron

I think the 7mm TCU might be marginal for pig hunting.  I wanted to hunt with it so bad so I decided to only take a shot if the conditions were perfect.  I passed on a much larger hog, probably around 300 pounds.  Besides being bigger he was slightly obstructed by brush, the shot was a little longer, and i was shaking like crazy.

Great shot....

Did you have a partner with you?  Or additional backup protection?

the guy i knew was from florida.  so you have a twin out there somewhere.    :)

as far as contender calibers,  the 7-30 or even 30-30 works really well.  i dont know if the 7-30 will do much that the 7tcu wont.   i am no expert on the tcu, though.

I was hunting with a friend who had a compound bow.  Not the best backup.  I considered carrying my 1911 as a backup, but I think it may be awkward to carry two handguns at once.

I was hunting on private land west of Cloverdale, CA.  There are many pigs in that area, but almost all the land is private.
