Who makes aftermarket stocks for the Rem. 788? I have checked several of the stock makers web-sites and usually only find stocks for 700's and model Sevens.

I would like a synthetic, but a wooden stock, with the correct look may work as well.

Appreciate your responses.

Ramline makes a synthetic for around 80 bucks, go to www.midwayusa.com and type 788 in the keyword search. I just put a boyds thumbhole on my 788 if you want to see what it looks like its probally on the second page by now under (788 .222 gets a makeover).

Inrut...thanks for the reply. I checked out your Boyds stock. Looks great. I also checked out the ramline stock at midway. Both are really reasonably priced. I like the looks of the laminate and would enjoy the fitting / bedding process. The synthetic probably fits my needs better, as this rifle will be seeing hard use and tough conditions. Now I just have to make up my mind...

Im just curious, Is your factory stock really nice wood and you dont want to ruin it ? Im just wondering, because my factory stock has worse grain than a sheet of osb, but my buddies 788 6mm rem has a really nice maple stock. You didnt say what caliber you had and what your using it for, but if your using it for deer, especially if your driving deer, getting to the safety in a rush is a bit awkward from a carry position on a thumbhole stock, but for me hunting groundhogs its no issue.

Oh...my factory stock. Well I bought this gun for my son when he was 6. It is a .223. I cut the barrel down to 20" and probably 3-4 inches off the stock so it would fit a youngster. The original stock was, as you say, osb with a finish on it. We lived in Alaska at that time and there was no age limit for hunting so he got an early start. He actually shot a nice little sitka blacktail that first year he carried the gun, but thats another story. Anyhow, the rifle turned out to be an absolute tack-driver. My son is grown now and only hunts with bow and arrow, so I have the gun. My plan is to stock it with a "big-boy" sized stock and keep it in my truck for coyotes, calling and general "gotta have a gun with me occasions".

I like the looks of a nice stock, but this rifle is gonna be used such that a nice stock might be hard to maintain.
