Guys help me out with a 243 handi that wont shoot
« on: March 29, 2005, 02:59:50 AM »
I just got a 243 superlight that I cant get to shoot. i've polished the barrel, done the trigger 2.5 lbs, floated the barrel with a washer and still cant get it to shoot better than 2-3" I have checked the scope rail and switched scopes. I've heard they are finnicky about loads and thats my last option. please share your sweetest load. I really want to make this a shooter, all my other handi's shoot sub inch.  i've called HR1871 and they weren't very helpful

My 243 isn't a superlight, but I found that it shot a lighter bullet, 60 gr. HP, well with IMR 4064.  However when I tried to use that same powder with a heavier bullet, 85 gr., it wouldn't group well.  I switched to a slower burning powder and the accuracy picked back up.  It seems that my rifle doesn't like boat tail bullets.
Thanks,
Trapper Jack

This is a common theme I have noticed with my Handi's as well.

Either IMR or Hodgdons 4350 are about the most accurate powders for most 243 loads, especially with heavier bullets.

Try 85gr Sierra BTHP's with a mid level charge of 4350 behind it.

Other than that I've heard the superlights are the hardest to get consistent groups from.  In my opinion, any rifle should be able to fire 3 shots quickly, but you might wait a few min between shots to test.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

I had the same problem with mine until I started using different loads to see what it liked best.I settled on 100 grain Remington and it now shoots 1-1/2 " groups at 100 yards.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

With a Rem 100gr PSP start using H1000 about 45gr this  is a low pressure load with good velocity. Increase your loads a 1/2 grain to maybe 47gr and monitor your pressure and accuracy.

Handis operate well with slow powder nothing faster than the three kinds of 4350 (IMR,Hodgdon, Accurate) will do much better in the 243.

Factory loads are designrd to operate a 60Kpsi much too hot for the Handi in my opinion. Because of the slow nature H1000 can be tweaked to 100% load density if no pressure signs creep up. That means all available room below the bullet base.

My Ultra 243 likes H414 and 70gr Speer TNT's, it will shoot sub .75" when I do my part.  Im working up a load with 55gr Ballistic tips, currently I have only chronoed them.  At 1/2gr. under max, they were at 4098-4075 fps!! I will have to group them to see how they shoot
