I didn't get nothing but a bunch of confused cattle. I was set up on a nice little mound, with taller ones behind me, with the wind in my face and managed to call in a real nice herd of cattle. I guess this is gonna' take a little more practice. I used two calls that day, both by Sceery. The first one was a course cottontail and the other was a jackrabbit call. I'll just keep trying until I get one that comes into range.

Anyone have any hints for this rookie? I had good cover and I know that there are coyotes in the area...they can often be seen in the pastures just trottin' around.

Also, I managed to do some squirrel shooting with my new Howa Varminter Supreme in .223! My long shot of the weekend was a surprising 406 yds. I was using Ultramax 55gr Nosler BT that day. My rifle seems to like the 50gr V-Max reloads from Black hills the best though. At the range I was getting .5 MOA with 5 shot groups...not too bad for a factory "cheapie"!

Don't worry Steve! I think most of us have called in cows, collies, llamas, and who-knows-what-else.

It's snowing like hell up here (go figure, Montana in January) and the coyote rut is looming, so I've been out howling like mad.

To utterly no avail, it seems. I DID manage to get every farm dog in the county dancing in circles last Sunday morning, but that was about it. Glad I was cammied up or someone woulda shot me, Im pretty sure.

My first time calling I called in my neighbor's black lab! It didn't know what to do when I stood up from behind a bush!

I built one of the home built electronic callers listed below. The first time I carried it and my decoy to the woods I called in the following.

One red fox
Two Red Tail Hawks
The neighbors blue heeler
One whitetail doe
and had a buzzard circling the decoy.

One of the hawks landed in a tree above the decoy and was definitely eyeballing it. I thought for a second that the hawk was gonna make an attempt to grab my decoy. Makes for an interesting day...

Use a mouth call at night and have an owl fly about 3 feet over your head! That whoosh of feathers will get your attention.

My oldest son and I went sat. Using a wounded rabbit mouth call. And had 2 hawks (one red tail and one red tip) just about land in our laps, my son was telling me to stop but I want to see how close I could get them. They got with in 20 or 30 feet, that was the fun, on the other side of the coin we just got one coyote and never got him out of the woods just could see him between trees. But all and all varmint hunting that day was a blast!!!!
