Need help with shotgun
« on: February 11, 2004, 03:02:16 PM »
Hey guys :D

I have a chance to trade for a Ithaca MDL 600 over & under 20 ga. with fixed chokes Imp. & Mod.  On the left side of the barrel it is marked (Custom Crafted for Ithaca by SKB) Does anyone know about these guns? The custom crafted for Ithaca by SKB is what puzzled me about this gun Any info. about this gun would greatly appreciated. It would make a great Bird and rabbit gun.

Weren't nothing "custom" about them. They were made by SKB in Japan and imported by Ithaca for a number of years. They were in the same price bracket as the Browning Citori and Winchester 101 also made in Japan.

The Model 500 was the standard version and the 600 was a wee bit more deluxe with as I recall a silver looking receiver rather than blued and maybe a little better wood.

They were notorious for beating up the face especially in the 12 ga. I had a 20 ga. Model 500 once and even it beat up my face a bit more than I liked so I traded it off. The 28 ga and .410 bore having so little recoil are really nice. The 20 ga. with regular skeet level loads is OK. It is really no better or worse gun than a Win. 101 or Browning Citori both of which carry a little better resale value even if only slightly so.

I can't tie down the date of manufacture too closely but likely in the mid 60s to mid 70s time frame. Price? Varies a lot from region to region really. I'd say in the $500-$700 range depending on region. Around here usually on the lower end of that range. For sure I'd not pay more and unless you just particularly want that gun I'd only pay on the lower end of the range. You can usually find Win. 101s and Browning Citoris in the same price range and really I prefer them but some really like the SKBs.
