« on: March 15, 2005, 09:04:33 AM »
Any guesses/opinions re the effective range for a 14.5"XP100 35Rem?,
any advantage in rechambering to 358Win?
Thanks.

Great cartridge in a hand cannon.
If you find the right load that gives you good tight groups I consider 100 yds to be a cinch and out to 150 with the right load, a good trigger and a steady rest. I personally see no significant gain in the rechambering you mentioned but others who favor the .358 may not agree.
If you reload you have a lot of options to experiment with. I really like the 158gr XTP/FP in my .35 Rem. It will reach out there and it is constructed for rifle velocities unlike the 158gr XTP/HP. Have some fun playing with it before you decide whether or not to butcher it up.

8) The .35 Remington in an XP-100 will easily handle 200 yard shots.  The action is much stronger than the Marlin Rifles, and can withstand loadings substantially greater than those ordinarily published.  Pick up an old copy of "Handguns and handgun Hunting" (I think that is the correct title) by Larry Kelly and J.D. Jones and you will see what I mean.

I have a .358 Winchester in an RPM XL Hunter with a 14" barrel, and it will only best my top end XP-100 .35 Rem. loads by 10-15%.  [The XP-100 loads in question are with H-322 and AA-2520 and a 200 gr. bullet.  I will not post them, as you need to work up loads in your own gun.]

I discussed re-chambering my XP-100 to .358 Win. with JDJ, and he did not think it would be worth that difference over what I am already getting with the .35 Rem.  Admittedly, I have not spent the time pushing the limits of the .358 Win. RPM, and it would probably do better.

If you want more power, you can convert to .350 Rem. Mag., but a fiberglass reinforced stock, and a brake/ported barrel are a MUST.  An easier conversion would be to 35/284 Win., which is close to .350 Rem case capacity.  This is a handloading only proposition, but that is pretty much true of the .358 Win. these days.

All that being said, IMHO in the interest of cost and user friendliness, I would leave the XP-100 as is.  The R-P 200 gr RNCL will do a good job with the heavier loads, as will the Speer 220 gr FN.  The Hornady 200 gr Spire Point has a more aerodynamic profile, but I find the jacket material to be somewhat tougher than with their 200 gr RN.  It is hard to beat AA-2520 for accuracy, uniformity, and reasonable pressures with heavy (200+) bullets in this cartridge.

Good Luck.   Sawfish

Sawfish,

Very good reply...  the 35 Rem is a good round when pushed up to bolt action pressures.

If I was going to re-chamber, my call would be the 35-284.

8) Spyro,

Thank you for the kind words.  From time to time, I am tempted to try the 35/284 chambering because of the much stronger case, but I am not willing to sacrifice my .35 Remington.  One of the things that Jim Rock steadfastly preached was that you can only burn so much powder in a given barrel volume.  The .35 Remington is pretty well matched to the factory barrel length.  Thanks again.

Sawfish,

One of my all time favorite hunting rigs is an Encore w/ a 16" 338-284 Barrel.

The 180 grain ballistic tip is pure devistation on deer sized game and it shoots flat and accurate.  Also, I had a 375-284 and it was very good on larger animals.

I have to figure that the 35-284 is a great performer.

Hans, I had jd rechamber my t/c contender to his .358JDJ round because of misfire problems.I gained a BUNCH of recoil and maybe 50 yards on the 35 Rem.The JDJ round is NOT good with lighter bullets. I don't think I would rechamber the bolt gun. In a contender the 200 grain round noses can be pushed over 2050 fps.The 358 in a 14/15 inch barrel will get you another couple hundred fps BUT at a cost in powder and recoil.
Either round will take deer past where you SHOULD be shooting at them!

8) Spyro,

I agree with your assessment of the 35/284, and will have one someday when I can find an XP-100 that I am willing to butcher, or can locate a California Encore, or when our esteemed attorney general comes to his senses (least likely).  IMHO, the .284 Win. case was far ahead of its time.  The original short mag in sheep's clothing.  Regards.

A 35-284 would definitely give you a lot more horsepower, but the 35 Rem. will do everything you want out to 200 yards.
I would suggest if you really wanted to up the range go to the 35 WSM.  With your barrel length I wouldn't rechamber to the WSM but would rebarrel (little heavier taper and length) and go with a 338WSM or the 35 WSM.

FWIW if you ever decide or choose to rebarrel, the sky is the limit with an XP-100.

I've been wondering about the 358Win[vs the 35Rem],since:
-I already have the brass,dies,ammo
-I can make out of 308 hulls
S.N. for a 100 yard deer cartridge,the 7-30Waters works OK[and again: is easy/cheap to make out of 30/30 hulls];ditto the 357Max.
I appreciate the feedback.

Hi Guy`s,

PMC is going to look into making this Starfire load for the 35 Remington.Heres what PMC posted.

Thank you for all your responses gentelmen. We will be discussing the possibility of this load at the next gathering. I have done a bit of searching myself and have seen numerous other forum posts on other boards regarding the .35 Rem. Personally, I think it would be a rather popular round, so I am putting it on top of the list.

Keep those votes coming, gives me more ammo in the board room

hans,
1st, what kind of game are we considering?
Second, what would be the maximum range you would want to be able to cleanly down that type(s) animal?
