I absolutely agree, the companies were much more attentive to the marketplace than they are now. Today I feel they try to push the market to create another market niche. The WSSM and other short rounds don't have any majic properties. Had a gentleman tell me he was certain him 300 wssm or whatever generated more velcoity with the same pressure and generated less recoil.. Strange, Winchester seems to have altered the laws of physics!!! Roy Weatherby made similar claims for the double venturie shoulder... It also was happy hogwash. Reloading tests seem to bear out velocity and case capacity and pressure are in sync between the supershort mags and the former short mags, the 300 win , etc... The problem with bullet seating is easiest to fix by throating comensurate with the OAL possible in the action being used. Long throats are a fixable problem.. I built my 300 Mag on a Winchester made Enfield action. To best utilize all the case capacity I use 200 grain spitzers (Nosler Partitions) and a 26 inch barrel.. It was throated for the 200 Speer(the bullet I started with) although I was forced to switch when one of these HotCore bullets exploded on the ribcage of a largish whitetail buck. I have nothing against the 308 Norma, just no reason to go to the trouble,, The 300 Winchester properly chambered will do more and will also fit into standard length actions. I believe the ultra's are baloney... If I needed more horsepower I'd likely go to larger bullets(you are right).. I kinda like the 338 WinMag but have a problem finding something around here large enough to warrant that much killing.. I usually use a 7mm Mag or the 300 win when serious but enjoy the 6.5x55 and have used the 243 extensively on deer. I've killed 2 moose, both with 30-06 and 180 nosler partitions.. I am experimenting with a 38-55 levergun and contemplating a 444 or 45-70, just for kicks.. I've a 25-06 (Ruger No.1) and a 270 (Rem m721/douglas barrel) in the works. Just can't seem to find the time for my own when the customers are waiting.. My favorite centerfire is (by rounds fired) is likely a 222 although the 22 Hornet is approaching equality rapidly.. As to wildcatters creating many of the great cartridges you are certainly right. Gebby, Page, Ackley etc. can claim a great many fine rounds..
