Ghost Ring or Scope on 1894P
« on: March 01, 2005, 05:05:10 AM »
I currently have a 4X scope on my 1894P.  It is very accurate but I would like to make this carbine more carry friendly.  I hunt alot in the thick stuff and I think that taking the scope off would make things easier.
Would a ghost ring be a viable option?  Is this set up easier to shoot that the factory sights?  Those who shoot the ghost ring, please let me know your opinions.

I put Williams peeps on all my lever guns that are drilled and tapped for receiver sights.  For me, and most other folks I shoot with, it's easier to shoot better with the peeps (vs. factory open sights).  If you want a "ghost ring," you just unscrew the aperature and tuck it in your pocket.

I have XS ghost ring on both my 1894cs and my 1895m and they are excellent, especially on the 357, head shots on bunnies are not a problem, I love the whole ghost ring setup.

Ditto to Leverfan's answer.  That's exactly what I was gonna say!  He's obviously a pretty smart guy, since we agree on so many things.......

I had an AO Ghost ring on my 1895 45/70 and took it off.  Accurage enough at the range, but difficult for me to get a good quick shot at game with the front post design.  I think there was just too much front post - too wide and too tall.  It was a patridge style, black with a white center stripe.

It also turned out to be more expensive than a Williams b/c I had to buy several front sights of different heights that were fairly expensive.  I ended up buying the tallest one and filing it down.  Now adays, AO Sights/XS Sights sends a plastic front sight for you to sight in with.  When you get the right height, you have them send you a metal front sight.

It would seem to me that if they are selling a sight for an 1895 45/70 with a 22" barrel, they should know which front sight you need.  They would not exchange the front sight I bought for another front sight of a different height.  Just buy another one and guess.

I also did not like the windage/elevation adjustments.  They were not repeatable and you had to loosen one screw and tighten the other, shoot , check and repeat.  You have to loosen one of the windage screws to adjust the elevation and then your windage might be off when you tighten it back down.

It seems to me that the Williams and Lyman sights with micrometer 1/4" clicks would be a better setup.  Also next time I'm going with a fiber optic round dot for the front.

A scope on a lever-action.    My 1894C has a ghost ring and a Williams fire front sight post.  Quick and easy to change.  Works great for me.

Not worth the money in my opinion.  I used their plastic front sight to verify the front sight height needed, and the one that came with was centered in the up and down adjustment range.  Switched loads and ran out of sight adjustment, would have needed a new front sight.  I also lost one of the little screws for the windage when adjusting it.  Pain in the butt.  Sold the thing for a loss and went to firesights.
