Stinkin cheapo 45 brass!
« on: April 04, 2005, 04:55:21 AM »
I'm getting a lot of vertical splitting in my 45ACP cases lately. Every session I get at least one split case. The stuff's only been reloaded about 40 times so I can't understand why it's starting to fail so soon.

Gee, I'm starting to have the same problem with some 9mm brass and .357 brass.  Only loaded about 40 or 45 times, and have only had it since the early 1960's!

Think it is a conspiracy by the brass manufacturers?  Trying to get us to buy more?

I sense a personal feud here.

I throw my old brass away after 7 reloads. It sounds like Questor is a little on the cheap side.

Do you also throw away your vehicle when the tires wear to 1/2 the original tread?

Did you discard your lady friends when you were younger after bedding them only 7 times?

Do you chew your food 3 times then spit it out instead of swallowing it?

There is absolutely no reason to discard brass until it starts to show signs of failure.

I have some 44mag brass that’s about worn out only reloaded it 28 times (going to be 29 after I finish shooting the rest). It might make it to 30.

If they weren't good. YES

But seriously I trim my brass once. After that its trash can time.
Which means I can get several firings or just a few depends on manufacture?
I've thrown away Remington brass in as few as 5 firings. I personally think it was a bad lot. This same lot was .010"-.020" over SAMMI max when I bought it new.

It all depends maybe MickinColo is running his loads at MAX and that’s all he can get out of brass is 7 reloading.
Which is fine anything after 3 reloading for most calibers the brass is FREE anyway.
Unless you’re talking brass for my 460WBY then after 1 reloading the brass is FREE.

It's not your brass Questor, it's your dies... you should switch back to Lee for sure.

MickInColo:

It was intended as a humorous post only.  In fact, by the time they've been reloaded enough to split I almost feel sorry for the things because they look so worn.

As for discarding brass, it really depends on what cartridge it is.  I keep the 45s until I either lose them or they break because 45ACP with target loads is such a forgiving caliber with low pressure. With my high pressure rifle brass I only load them 4 times before discarding them. I know that in .270 I can probably get 10 reloads, but I just don't want any problems with these cases that I seldom use. When I use them I want no chance of failure.

I also keep revolver brass until the case mouths start to split. In the case of 44 mag and 38 special this has always meant a split of no more than one forth of an inch near the case mouth.  These are roll-crimped cases so I expect that. In the case of 44 mag, I keep "hunting only" brass that is either new or close to new. After a few loadings I put it in with the practice brass.

The 45ACPs split almost the entire length of the case.

I NEVER throw out brass until it shows signs of failure (usually longitudinal cracks from the case neck).
All of my loads are MAX or near-MAX loads, no wimpy target guff for me in any of my rifles and handguns, thanks !

I dont buy into that bunk of only using new or once fired brass for max loads either !

I have been doing this for almost 20 years and see no reason to change either.

MAX/Magnum/+P or nuthin' !
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

Ricciardelli,

No, I don’t throw my tires away after 7 miles,

I didn’t thrown my wife out after 7 years (it’s been 37years now),

Yes, I’ve thrown some of my girlfriends out long before 7 times,

I generally swallow the food I put in my mouth no matter how many times I chew it.

And I have my reasons for throwing away old brass (only shot 7 times).

Because I worn out the rifle (I buy cases 300-500 pieces at a time) and rifles last a long time?

I’m not so cheap that I need to reload them after the third case trim?
