What would be a ball-park figure to expect for the cost of converting this 30-06 to a 280 Rem or a 284 Win?

Can't seem to sell it, so I figured I might get it converted to something I'd rather use than the 30-06 if the cost isn't to high!

A lot depends on your choices.  Barrels can be had for under $100 and I've seen guys install them for $50, the bluing was extra.  One can also spend several hundred for a really good barrel and a couple more for installation.  Probably in the neighborhood of $225 to $400.  Perhaps a bit less, perhaps a bit more..

You can get a rifle rebarreled for a few hundred bucks or you can get it done right.    Which way you go depends on just what you want, if you want a rifle to hunt with and will settle for a 1.5"+or- at 100 yards then go the cheeper route.    If you want a guaranteed shooter then it will cost more.
A barrel like a Shilen Match grade will run a bit under $400 lap the recoil lugs and square the action from $50 to $100 depending on time.    Head spacing  about $50.    In addition to this you will have blueing, $150 and mabe opening up the barrel channel and a glass bedding job.
All in all not a cheep proposition but if done right you get that sub half minute of angle rifle.   On the custom rifles I build or barrel I take the involved route but we guarantee 1/2" or less groups with an accuracy load.    Going the less expensive way you may get a shooter, you may not but what it boils down to is what will make you happy with your rifle.
Bye the way have you thought of just rechambering and opening up the bolt face for some thing like the .308 Norma mag or the .300 Winchester?    Cost wise that would be the cheapest route and still allow you to lap the lugs and stuff like that.
There is no such thing as over kill!!!!  :-)

In truth most barrels will outshooter their owners..  The very best accuracy will come from the top of the line barrels installed with everything that can be done to the rifle, done.  If your building a benchrest rifle or target rifle of sometype it is a worthwhile thing.  If you demand pure accuracy then that is undoubtedly the way to go, but if your just looking at a hunting rifle and consider 300 yards the edge of game shooting distances and can live with benchrested groups that a silver dollar will cover(not a quarter), perhaps you can live without a benchrest rifle..
