SRH Customizing Suggestions
« on: November 17, 2003, 06:14:19 PM »
I've got a SRH in .44 mag with the 9 1/2" tube.  After having the gun now for about 7 years I've finally harvested my first whitetail with it.  This gun is a shooter, a keeper, and I'm thinking of adding some personal touches to it.

Although recoil isn't all that bad with full power loads I'm thinking of getting some Magna Ports or a brake installed.  I'd also like to get the gun refinished to a matte gray or maybe even camo.  I've wondered if I really need all that barrel at times and think that 8" would be just about perfect.  Action job probably wouldn't hurt as well.

I'm wondering if any SRH owners have shelled out the cash for any of the above custom stuff.  Is there anything I haven't listed that I should be considering?

Thanks for all of your input!

I have the 7-1/2 SRH and do find it to be a great shooter.  The only thing that I did to it was a trigger job.

The original spring was poor, after a Wolff spring kit it was light but had a little creep, I took it apart and lightly honed the sear and connecting parts.   It was better but not great, after a year and perhaps 1,000 round it is now very good.

Other than the trigger I have done nothing else.  I have toyed with the idea of sand blasting the hell out of it to make it a dull finish.

Perhaps you could buy the 7-1/2 inch barrell instead of chopping and crowning your old barrel and then remounting the sight.

Good luck,

I've got a SRH 454. I had Larry Kelly (Mag-na-port Arms) do a complete action job.
Rework forcing cone & timing
Lighten & smooth action
Number cylinders

In the 454 I should have had him polish out the cylinder walls to improve extraction, but I didn't think of it @ the time.

The gun is definately nicer to shoot but it is probably not any more accurate from a handgun hunting perspective. The 300+ lb boar that I shot was not impressed. Dead, but not impressed. :)
