I have a few years to go before I retire, and like the thought of setting up shop as a gunsmith.  Can anyone recommend a place to learn the craft?  I live in Wisconsin and it would be best if it is near by.

There was schools in Oklahoma, Colorado, Pennsylvania & North Carolina. I have taken an NRA summer class in Tishomingo, OK (Murray State College), but know nothing about the rest. Nothing all that close to you though. Good Luck!

I never attended a school but highly reccomend it.  I learned through the school of hard knocks and by amassing (and reading) a huge library full of books and magazines.  the Colorado school has some distiquished graduates..

Colorado School of Trades in Lakewood, CO, west of Denver.  I have known many of the schools' students/graduates through the years, and have a high respect for the training they received there.  Of course, some people are more gifted than others! :lol:

Not sure where in Wis you are, but Pine City,Mn teaches from the Technical College just North of Twin Cities....

The NRA has links to several community college gunsmithing programs.  I thought Pine City was one of them but apparently not this year.  Check out http://www.nragunsmithing.com" target="_blank">NRAGunsmithing.com for links to this year's programs.  the advantage to these programs is the courses are only a week or two long which limits the cost but lets you evaluate the college.

i know a few smiths that have attended pine city and it seems to be a pretty good school.
