AK47 or SKS?
« on: April 06, 2005, 07:19:13 AM »
Going to the gun show this weekend. Before they get the AWB back I was wanting to get a high cap. rifle. I was wondering what one is the best the AK47 or SKS?? What country makes the best of these two and what should I expect to pay? Thanks

If you want a Hi-cap, then you definitely want the AK.  The detachable mags for the SKS are usually less than reliable.  The AK is the very definition of 'reliable'!

My advise is buy both and all you can just incase it gets halted in your state or our country we just never know what can happen.  Both the AK47 7,62x39 and SKS 7,62x39 are equal in reliability and dependability with the edge in accuracy going to the sks.  The sks can feed with larger capacity mags but you may have to tweek them to get them right.  I have 30rders that all feed well right out of the box.  But they are the early mags and there all steel unlike the half steel and half plastic one. (pusher is plastic sometimes and it requires fitting in the mag body they seem to stick in certain places in the body of the mag but sanding the pusher and making it loose and lube it with some CLP and it will feed with no problems)   I've had problems with big AK mags too with the same problem the steel and plastic just don't mix.                                                                           BigBill

AK for sure,, lots of extras you can get, custom configure it any way you want..  your limited to what you can do with a SKS,,,also your choice of a 10, 20, 30, 40, round mag or a 72 or 100 round drum on a AK...provided you buy a Hi cap AK to start with...

For high capacity the AK, but stripper clips for the SKS are alot cheaper than the mags for an AK - and they are easier to carry. For the same price you can get 2 SKS rifles and a bunch of stripper clips. Then you and a friend are both armed.

I like AKs but SKSs are fun and there is a lot you can do with them also, More accuarte and cheaper come to the front with me.

Want more rounds look for a SKS-M or -D models they take AK mags and with a little dremel work will take drums.

You won't go wrong with eighter thou just make the best deal you can and be happy shootin fin e little rifles. 8)

Get the AK first.  It is most likely to be affected by any future AWB.  On the low end (stamped receiver) you should be able to pick a new, decent post-post ban (aka pre-ban) configuration model for under $400.  I just got one for $325 + tax.

That said, the SKS rifles are great buys - now going for about $100 in used condition to about $150 for like new.  Since they have a fixed 10-round mags and no "pistol" grip they are les likely to see severe regulation.

Doubt you'll find any centerfire ammo cheaper than 7.62x39!
